Who is Kristina Mladenovic's ex-boyfriend, Dominic Thiem?
Dominic Thiem was born on September 3, 1993, in Wiener Neustadt, Austria. His father, Wolfgang and his mom, Karin, are tennis coaches. Dominic has a brother named Moritz. Dominic began playing tennis at the mere age of 6. When Dominic was 11, he switched to 1-handed backhand. He turned professional in 2011. He won 17 ATP Tour-level singles titles, including a major at the 2020 U.S. Open. Later, in 2021, Dominic suffered a wrist injury from which he never fully recovered, ultimately retiring from tennis following the 2024 Vienna Open.
Kristina Mladenovic and Dominic Thiem's short-lived romance
Kristina and Dominic were first romantically linked back in 2017. They were considered one of tennis' most-talked-about couples between 2017 and 2019. The former pair reportedly met when the 33-year-old French tennis star asked Dominic for a warm-up hit during a practice session in 2017. Eventually, they fell in love, and in January 2018, they made their relationship Insta-official. Speaking to Rolex Paris Masters, Dominic once shared a glimpse into his and Kristina’s love story. He said:
"She asked me for a warm-up. So it’s her, but I’m not sure she was looking for a date or something. There was a lot in between, but it’s too long to answer, but that’s how it started."
Earlier, in an interview, Kristina explained that she felt the luckiest for the relationship with Dominic as they both belonged to the same world, tennis. She said, "I am very lucky and fortunate with my relationship. Obviously, in many ways, it helps to have a person that understands your job and sacrifices and accepts your job as a woman. It’s not easy every day, but there are also difficulties because you have to be apart from your partner, but I think the understanding and the love is more powerful, and the respect is amazing, so I am the luckiest."
In 2018, Dominic and Kristina regularly posted lovey-dovey posts on their Instagram handles. In the same year, Dominic shared a snap from a romantic getaway and captioned the post as, "Last couple of days with my love! #paradise #vacation #2018 #4ocean." However, Dominic and Kristina’s romance was short-lived and they called it quits after nearly two years of dating in November 2019. At the time, Dominic’s father, Wolfgang, said to News.com.au:
"They do not spend too much time together – even if there are combined tournaments that allow them to meet. She has a lot to do with the French team for the Fed Cup in Paris. They celebrate the title. Very happy for her."
At the time, Kristina helped France win the Fed Cup, and thus it is believed that Dominic chose not to speak publicly about the rumours that they had broken up. Later, Dominic shared what went wrong in their relationship. He shared that as both of them kept travelling all around the globe and it was becoming hard for them to spend quality time with each other, they thought of breaking up. Explaining it further, Dominic mentioned that it’s difficult to manage a relationship along with busy schedules of tennis and touring around the different cities; it is hard to maintain a successful relationship.
