He is a writer, segment director and a co-founder of a comedy troupe called Good Neighbour. Besides being a segment director at SNL, Dave also directed a film, Brigsby Bear, starring his SNL cast member, Kyle Mooney. 

According to a report by Elle, Brigsby Bear was released in 2017 in select theatres and grossed USD 500k at the box office. He co-produced a film, When You Finish Saving the World, with his wife, Emma Stone, under the banner of Fruit Tree Productions, which was founded in August 2020.

Emma Stone first crossed paths with the man of her dreams, Dave McCary, in December 2016, when she hosted SNL. The Bugonia actress performed in the show, Well for Boys sketch, which was directed by Dave. Years later, the couple reportedly got engaged at the Saturday Night Live offices in New York City, as per a Page Six report. In 2019, the segment director of SNL revealed the engagement news on Instagram by sharing a romantic picture flaunting the engagement rings. The insider told Page Six:

"Dave proposed at the offices where they first met at NBC’s Manhattan HQ, 30 Rock. No one was there, and by all accounts, it was very romantic."

According to a report by People, Emma Stone and Dave McCary tied the knot in September 2020, after dating for three years. The same outlet confirmed the couple’s relationship in late 2017. At the time, a source told People that the duo had been dating for three months. After six months of their marriage, the two welcomed their first child, a daughter, on March 13, 2021. However, the couple’s relationship changed drastically after they were blessed with a baby girl. A source close to Emma told People:

"They are a very grounded and private couple and were ready for a family. Emma is close to her family and good friends, but not the type to flaunt her personal life. Dave respects that about her, and is the same way. They have a great life together and support each other."

Within one month of embracing parenthood, Emma and Dave became closer. The source told US Weekly that Dave had been helping his wife and taking good care of the baby. The couple had been maintaining a low-key life and requested privacy at the time. The source was quoted as saying:
