The Okanogan County coroner's office confirmed to PEOPLE that Matt Brown passed away from suicide. According to the report, subsequent immersion in the water and the influence of methamphetamine were cited as the contributing factors to Matt's death at the age of 42. To mention, Bear Brown, Matt's brother, had suspected that he had passed away due to suicide, while adding that he was not able to wrap his head around the fact that his brother could take such a drastic step. Later, he also said that it was seemingly from a self-inflicted wound that Matt passed away.

There had been a buzz that Matt Brown was 'shunned' by his family, a claim which Bear Brown dismissed, and added that it was the former who didn't want to do anything with them. Matt's family also released a statement, revealing that the truth about their family was far more complicated. The family mentioned that Matt's father tried to help him throughout his struggles with mental health issues and addiction, an attempt that went on even after his dad passed away.

The friend couldn't reveal the exact timeline of Matt Brown and his alleged girlfriend Jamie's breakup, but the dynamic was something that was in the late star's mind, weeks ahead of his passing, as shared by the friend. On top of that, Matt reportedly got extremely frustrated when he couldn't get his pickup van running. According to the sources, Matt's girlfriend might have had the notion in mind about where he was, as she was the one to push everyone really hard to go in that water, and she was the one to basically spearhead the searchers on the river. Exactly what happened between the couple was not known, but she reportedly received a lot of calls from him before his passing. According to the family friend:

"He couldn’t get his pickup truck running, and that was part of his frustration on that day was the truck’s not going to get running — he can’t go on his trip. [He] broke up with his girlfriend. All of these things hit him at the same time on that day. He had been walking and riding buses and, you know, from town to town to, to survive. He was using buses and stuff. Matt’s girlfriend was really, really pushing us hard to get it moving and get out there on that water. I think she had a notion of where she thought he was, you know, in her mind, I think."
