Vijay Varma's gripping crime drama, Matka King, was released back on April 17, 2026, and since then, the series has been making headlines. Vijay Varma plays the lead role of 'Brij Bhatti', which has been said to be inspired by the real-life 'Matka King', Ratan Khatri. The eight-episode series has become striking to the viewers for its blend of fiction and facts.
The series also features Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Jamie Lever, Siddharth Jadhav, Gulshan Grover, Vineet Kumar Singh, among others. As season 1 ended, there have been some lingering questions, one of them being, "Is 'Brij Bhatti' dead? People also have been asking about the Season 2 possibilities, while there is no such announcement as of yet, the emotional collapse, betrayal, and near-death scenes have left enough space open for the next plot to enter and rule. So, here's a detailed explanation of the ending of season 1 of Matka King.
Spoilers ahead!
Matka King is set in the 1960s gambling underworld, when a local man, 'Brij Bhatti' was working under a powerful businessman 'Laljibhai Seth', who exploits mill workers and runs gambling dens. 'Brij Bhatti', being agitated with this, decided to launch his own business, Matka (a form of gambling), which would bring transparency and trust. People could trust his model easily, as it was transparent, and random draws could have determined winners. Slowly, his model grabbed the public attention, taking him to the larger scale of success.

So, the series began showing how an ordinary man, out of genuinely honest intention, started his own business, and actually became successful. The series' finale showed 'Brij' seated on a 'throne of Gold’ and earthen pots, which symbolise how a street-level hustler became the 'King' of Mumbai's gambling world. But as he started getting successful, he started changing as well. His closeness to 'Gurlukh', who tried to help him enter the elite circle, caused a crack in his marriage with 'Barkha'.

'Barkha' accepted the emotional distance from 'Brij', but she soon realised that the man she chose as her life partner had changed completely. She left him, leaving their son with him. Towards the end of the series, 'Brij's brother 'Lachu', who betrayed him, had a deadly confrontation. 'Lachu' died, and 'Brij' lost one of his family members. However, by that time, his emotional stage got caged somewhere else, and thus, 'Lachu's death didn't let 'Brij' show real emotion.

Coming to the main question, whether 'Brij Bhatti' passed away at the end of season 1, as some hints were there. As he became successful, he started gaining attention from all around. He made a deal with a politician, 'Prataprao Bapat', and it also led him to lose his independence. A rival 'Darab' enters the picture, and 'Brij' is eventually attacked. He then sought protection from the police, but jail was also unsafe, and his jail inmates, who were working for 'Darab', shot the gambling 'King'. He was seen being taken to the hospital as he had been heavily bleeding.

Now, fans wondered if 'Brij' had passed away. To answer, he survived. But what is symbolic here is that by this time, 'Brij' had already passed away, but emotionally. The one whom we have seen at the beginning of the series, full of moral ethics and emotional cores and empathy, turned out to be someone who is just distant and successful, having suffered a whole lot of losses, like his wife and brother. Thus, although the physical death isn't shown, there's a slow emotional death that was visible, which also hints at what season 2 is going to have in it. So along with his rivals, 'Brij' will possibly have to face himself as well.
