Marilyn Monroe Was Beaten By Second Husband After She Filmed The Iconic White Dress Blow Up Scene

Marilyn Monroe, a name that was revolutionary in itself, was one of Hollywood's biggest stars. Born as Norma Jeane Mortenson, Marilyn carved an identity as a sex symbol in the 1950s and early 1960s. Hailed for her beauty, Marilyn began her career as a model and later turned into an actress, as she had always dreamed of.

Though her life had everything anyone could desire, be it fame, glamour, or money, she still led a sad life. Marilyn’s life had always been mysterious, and amid the glitz and glamour, all she craved was family. Born to a mother with paranoid schizophrenia, Marilyn spent her childhood in foster homes and faced abuse. But when she got married to baseball legend, Joe DiMaggio, her life turned into a complete mess. She was subjected to physical as well as emotional abuse.

Marilyn met Joe in late 1951 when she was 25 and was all set to become a big movie star. On the other hand, Joe was 37 and had just retired from baseball. They were complete opposites to each other as Marilyn knew nothing about sports and Joe had no interest in the movie business. It was Joe’s quiet mannerisms which attracted Marilyn. On the other hand, Joe was obsessed with Marilyn and was madly in love with her. Soon, his possessiveness turned into manipulation and jealousy.

While they were dating, Joe had the upper hand in the relationship as he tried to control Marilyn’s life. He would tell her whom she should see, how she should dress, and how to handle her work. Throughout their relationship, he also pushed Marilyn to quit her job and soon made a pact with her that she would wear less revealing clothes.

In 1954, the duo got married, and when Marilyn was spotted at the airport the next day as she left for her honeymoon, the press noticed her thumb was strapped with a bandage. It was speculated that it was a wound inflicted by her husband, Joe, but Marilyn rubbed it off as an accident. When Marilyn received an invitation to sing for the troops in Korea, Joe stopped her from going, but she eventually went ahead with her plan, leaving him angry.

Within months of their marriage, Marilyn looked moody and weepy. She once told Natasha Lyess that she was unhappy in her marriage. She revealed how Marilyn called her “when DiMaggio was being so filthy to her, when he beat her. She couldn’t stand being treated that way.” Once, Joe publicly humiliated Marilyn during the making of the film, Heat Wave.

The filming was attended by Joe and his friend, George Solotaire. Seeing her husband, Joe, on set, a delighted Marilyn ran to hug Joe, who pushed her away. Though it was the most embarrassing moment for Marilyn, she laughed it off by saying Joe didn’t want to get makeup on his suit. Amy Greene, wife of Milton Greene, recounted an episode of abuse and shared:

“I was sitting on the bed with her mink around me and Marilyn started to get undressed. She forgot I was sitting there and she was taking off her blouse. Her back was black and blue – I couldn’t believe it. She didn’t know what to say and she wasn’t a liar so she just said ‘Yes.’”

Whenever Marilyn Monroe’s name comes up, the very first image that comes to anyone’s mind is the white dress-clad Marilyn from the iconic subway grate scene. Though the scene from The Seven Year Itch garnered Marilyn a lot of attention, moments later, she was beaten black and blue. Yes, it was September 13th, 1954, when Marilyn was in New York filming The Seven Year Itch. The scene had Marilyn standing over a subway grate, letting the air rising from it cool her down. Her skirt was to billow in the air, making it one of the most titillating scenes.

A huge crowd gathered behind barriers to witness the iconic scene, alongside photographers. At this moment, her husband, Joe, was informed about the scene by one of his columnist friends. Joe waited for Marilyn at the hotel, and as she returned, a scuffle broke out. A lot of shouting and screaming was heard from the hotel lobby, and the following night, Marilyn reached the film set with bruises. Talking about Marilyn’s bruises, her hairdresser revealed, “There were bruises on her shoulders, but we covered them with makeup.”

After two weeks, Marilyn filed for divorce from Joe, and when he found out, another dreadful fight broke out. Neighbours witnessed loud noises, and Marilyn was seen pacing the street for hours. She signed the testament stating she had, through no fault of her own, suffered “grievous mental suffering and anguish” at the hands of Joe DiMaggio. She told the judge:

“Your honour my husband would get in moods where he wouldn’t speak to me for 5 to 7 days at a time – sometimes longer, 10 days. I would ask him what was wrong. He wouldn’t answer or he would say “Stop nagging me!” I was permitted to have visitors no more than three times in the nine months we were married. On one occasion, it was when I was sick. Then he did allow someone to come and see me.”
