Malcolm in the Middle fans received a wonderful gift this holiday season, after the creators announced the show would return for another run! Yes, Hulu has just announced plans to revive the much-loved series in 2026. However, fans have only one question: what can the new audience expect from it?
For Malcolm in the Middle fans, 151 episodes were not enough, and they are making sure that they get more of their beloved sitcom. For the unversed, Malcolm in the Middle ran for seven seasons on Fox in the early 2000s. And now, the show will return to TV screens for a special four-episode arc on Hulu in 2026. According to reports, the creators have decided to revive the show Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair for a special storyline on April 10, 2026.

The Malcolm in the Middle reunion brings back viewer favorites Bryan Cranston as 'Hal', Frankie Muniz as 'Malcolm', Jane Kaczmarek as 'Lois', and a couple of 'Malcolm's' TV siblings. Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair will return to screens 20 years after it originally went off air on May 14, 2006. Frankie Muniz's character, 'Malcolm,' is beckoned back to his dysfunctional family to help celebrate 'Hal' and 'Lois's' 40th wedding anniversary.

Disney acquired the rights to the 20th Century Fox studio programs after buying much of Rupert Murdoch's entertainment assets in 2019. The makers revealed the trailer for the upcoming reboot of Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair on December 29, 2025 (ET). The deal gave Disney blockbusters such as The Simpsons and Avatar. Recently, the Burbank entertainment giant dipped into the Fox vault to tap into the trend of comfort-food TV for millennials, boomers, and Gen Z.

Executives have watched nostalgic programming take off on streaming services such as Disney+ and Hulu. The return of Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair is expected to draw viewers who have followed Bryan Cranston's career even before his immaculate performance in AMC's crime drama, Breaking Bad. The reboot is also expected to return Frank Muniz to his moonlight era. While the actor remains popular in pop culture, he has also made a name for himself as a racecar driver affiliated with Ford.

In recent years, a study from the National Research Group has found that about 60 per cent of all TV consumed is library content. The study found that among Gen Z, 40 per cent of respondents said they gravitated to older shows because they are comforting and nostalgic. It has become evident that shows such as Friends, The Big Bang Theory, The Office, and How I Met Your Mother remain Gen Z favourites years after their release. Disney's research shows that a quarter of the shows young people list as their favorites were produced before 2010.

Disney's ABC has also been working to bring back the quirky hospital sitcom Scrubs on February 25, 2026. The comedy set in the fictional medical center Sacred Heart Hospital will reprise the bromance between Zach Braff and Donald Faison's characters, which the pair recently recreated in T-Mobile commercials. The show ran from October 2001 to March 2010 and was also produced by 20th Television and Bill Lawrence’s Doozer Productions. Sarah Chalke will return, and John C. McGinley will guest star. The show will run on ABC and, a day later, on Hulu.
While most of the original Malcolm in the Middle cast is expected to return for the limited series, some characters will be reprised by new faces. This includes Erik Per Sullivan, who played 'Dewey'. For the unversed, Erik is no longer an actor, so the part is now played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark. Additionally, the 'Wilkersons' house will be the same but rebuilt as part of the set, since the classic midcentury house in Studio City that served as an exterior for the show reportedly was renovated years ago.

The Malcolm in the Middle reboot will also introduce new characters. 'Malcolm' now has a daughter, played by the talented Keeley Karsten, and a girlfriend, played by Kiana Madeira. The original series ran on Fox from January 2000 to May 2006. Those episodes will continue to stream on Hulu. The Times' former TV critic, Howard Rosenberg, had previously called Malcolm in the Middle the "smartest, sharpest-written, most original comedy of the season."

The reboot is produced by Disney Television Studios and New Regency. Linwood Boomer, who created the original series, also returned as writer and executive producer. Ken Kwapis directs the four episodes and also serves as an executive producer. Beyond reviving old shows, Disney has also collaborated with advertisers to make throwback commercials to run in classic films on its streaming platforms and TV networks.
