Madonna, aka the Queen of Pop, has been in the headlines recently for her strained relationship with her eldest daughter, Lourdes Leon. Following the singer's recent conversation with Interview Magazine, in which she spoke about her new album with her estranged daughter, Madonna has now candidly reflected on the ups and downs of their relationship.

After years of unspoken resentment that once stood between them, the mother-daughter duo found their path towards healing through music. Appearing on the BBC special Madonna & Graham with Graham Norton, the Queen of Pop shared rare details about collaborating with Lourdes on a new song for her upcoming album.

Madonna says her daughter was 'very reluctant' to work with her

Speaking to Graham Norton, Madonna, 67, revealed that after years of strain in their relationship, Lourdes was initially reluctant to work alongside her. Given her mother's breakout fame, she never wanted her career to be defined by it. The singer said she understood her daughter's approach and respected her determination to establish herself independently. Madonna explained:

"She approached me, she's been very revenant to work with me. She doesn't want to be perceived as my daughter, taking advantage of her privilege... She's been very standoffish and working at her own pace, and I respect that deeply. She's a great songwriter and has a much better voice than I do."

Madonna opens up about Lourde's years of unresolved emotions that culminated in resentment

The Material Girl singer candidly admitted that one of the main reasons for her rift with her eldest daughter was their years of unresolved emotions. The turning point in their relationship came when Lourdes also admitted to her years of resentment. And on Madonna's part, she completely understood why her daughter felt that way. She told Norton:

"One day she came to me and said, 'You know what, I realise I've been holding onto something,' and maybe it's a kind of, I want to say, anger, what's another word, maybe resentment?... At the end of the day, she didn't ask for this. She had been through her adolescence struggling with those feelings for a long time."

Lourdes took the first step in bridging her rift with Madonna

Admitting one's own flaws and acknowledging the real problem takes a lot of guts, and Lourdes definitely has it. Madonna proudly shared how it was her daughter who suggested that they channel their unresolved emotions into music. They decided to write a song together where both could express themselves honestly. As for Madonna, she immediately embraced the idea. The singer proudly shared:

"She came to me and said, 'Let's write a song together. I think it will be a very healing experience. You say exactly what you want to say and I'll say exactly what I want to say.' I was like, 'Okay, you're on. Let's do it.' I was so happy. Her lyrics are beautiful."

Madonna and Lourdes Leon's relationship hasn't always been easy

Madonna and Lourdes Leon's relationship has often been the subject of public attention, with the model and musician previously opening up about the challenges of growing up with one of the world's biggest pop stars. "We don't get any handouts in my family," she told Interview in 2021, explaining that she wanted to build a life on her own terms rather than rely on her mother's fame or fortune.

In the same interview, Lourdes described Madonna as a "control freak" and said she felt the need to become financially independent immediately after high school. "My mom is such a control freak, and she has controlled me my whole life," she said. Yet at the same time, she acknowledged her privileged upbringing and praised her mother's work ethic, adding, "She's probably the hardest worker I've ever seen. I inherited her control issues, but not her work ethic."

Despite those past struggles, the two have grown closer in recent years, with Lourdes appearing in Madonna's Confessions II short film while also co-writing one of the album's tracks.

Madonna's upcoming album may be her most personal work yet

Confessions II, set for release on July 3, 2026, is the long-awaited follow-up to Madonna's iconic 2005 album, Confessions on a Dance Floor. The new record appears to be one of her most personal projects yet, where the popstar has drawn inspiration from her family, through her own grief, and her journey to healing broken relationships.
