Mackenzie Shirilla is currently dominating the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Recently, OTT giant, Netflix aired a documentary, The Crash, which follows the high-profile Ohio criminal case involving 21-year-old Mackenzie. She was accused of double murder when she was 17. As per reports, Mackenzie intentionally slammed her car into a brick building at 100 mph, killing her boyfriend, Dominic Russo and his friend, Davion Flanagan. However, Mackenzie’s aunt defended her niece and shared that she was madly in love with Dominic.
According to a report by TMZ, Mackenzie Shirilla’s aunt, Candace Shipley, defended her niece in the double homicide case and told the judge that she was "very much in love" with her boyfriend, Dominic Russo. The outlet obtained legal documents filed by Mackenzie, who challenged her prison sentence. In the court document, the 17-year-old (now 21-year-old) accused argued that prosecutors failed to prove she had a real motive to kill her boyfriend, Dominic and his friend, Davion.

Mackenzie also claimed that prosecutors presented witnesses who testified about her rocky 4-year relationship with Dominic, but failed to prove that she actually hated him or wanted to hurt him. While the court considers that Mackenzie intentionally killed her boyfriend and his friend, some people think otherwise. Mackenzie pointed out that she and her boyfriend appeared to be in love in the days and hours leading up to the terrible crash. The 21-year-old accused said one witness testified they saw her and her boyfriend together at 4 am on the day of the tragic incident.

Mackenzie pointed out that an owner of a store, where she and Dominic often used to go shopping, testified that the couple appeared "very loving" in the months before the crash. In addition, Mackenzie said that her aunt, Candice, said that she spent three hours with the two on July 28, 2022, "as the couple was scheduled to watch her dogs in the coming days." Mackenzie claimed that her aunt, Candice, testified that she did not observe any signs of "discomfort or unhappiness between Dominic and Mackenzie". Mackenzie pointed out that her aunt said that she and Dominic appeared "very much in love and spoke about their future plans together."

While Mackenzie Shirilla was accused of killing her boyfriend and his friend, her mom, Natalie, didn’t believe that her daughter intentionally killed the duo. The defence lawyer argued that the crash could have been caused by a medical issue triggered by Mackenzie’s postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), which is a condition that causes a person's heart to beat faster than normal. During the trial, Natalie painted her daughter as a victim rather than an accused.

In the first part of her speech, Natalie opened up about the harrowing incident. Natalie revealed that Davion was her daughter, Mackenzie’s good friend, and Dominic was the love of her daughter’s life. In fact, he was also part of their family. She felt sorry that things went terribly wrong, and the harrowing incident left them heartbroken. Natalie further stated that the tragic incident has left a deep scar in her daughter’s mind, and she cannot fully recover from it. Natalie added that her daughter couldn’t move on from Dominic and missed him terribly. She was quoted as saying:
"For three months after the accident, she would only wear his clothes. She would only eat the snacks he ate, and she would only listen to the music he wrote. She was lying in bed for three months crying, there was a shrine of him next to her with photos and things that he liked."
