Mackenzie Shirilla is currently hogging the limelight for all the wrong reasons. Mackenzie has been leading the headlines soon after Netflix aired the documentary, The Crash. According to multiple reports, the Netflix documentary follows the high-profile Ohio criminal case involving Mackenzie. She was convicted of the double murder of her boyfriend, Dominic Russo and his friend, Davion Flanagan, when she was 17. Mackenzie and Dominic had a rocky 4-year relationship. Amid this, Mackenzie’s text to Dominic’s mom after the fatal crash surfaced online.
For the unversed, on July 31, 2022, then 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla was driving home from a gathering with friends around 5:30 a.m along with her boyfriend, 20-year-old Dominic Russo and his friend, 19-year-old Davion Flanagan. However, at the time, Mackenzie’s Toyota Camry crashed into a brick wall in Strongsville, Ohio, at around 100 mph. Both Dominic and Davion died on the spot. After surviving the fatal crash, Mackenzie told police and others that she could not remember what happened.

According to a legal document of a 2024 Ohio Court of Appeals opinion upholding Mackenzie's conviction obtained by People, Mackenzie texted her boyfriend, Dominic’s mom, Christine Russo, sometime after the fatal crash that she had no memory of the tragic incident, and it was all because of her trauma. In the text, Mackenzie mentioned that she would try hypnosis to recover her lost memories. Her text to Christine can be read as:
"I remember turning onto the street, and then my vision fades to black. It really kills me not to be able to remember anything. I promise you I would tell you. I’ve been asking my therapist why I don’t remember, and she said it’s because of trauma. I’m gonna try to get myself hypnotised and make myself remember."

The court document also stated that Dominic’s mom, Christine, told investigators that six months before the fatal crash, Dominic and Mackenzie’s relationship had strained. She added that they often had arguments. Christine claimed that Mackenzie had become more "possessive" of Dominic. The court document mentioned that a friend of the Russo family testified that weeks before the harrowing incident took place, he witnessed Mackenzie making a threat to Dominic to crash her car with him inside. Later, Mackenzie’s parents, Natalie and Steve Shirilla, challenged the claim in the Netflix documentary, The Crash.

Mackenzie was arrested four months after the fatal car crash. Initially, the authorities treated the incident as an accident, but later they argued that it was a failed murder-suicide attempt due to their toxic, on-and-off relationship. In August 2023, Mackenzie was convicted of murder, aggravated vehicular homicide and several other offences. However, Mackenzie’s mom, Natalie think otherwise. The Netflix documentary featured a short clip of a six-minute speech, wherein she defended her daughter. She also tried to portray Mackenzie as a victim. In the first part of her speech, Natalie addressed the tragic incident. She expressed her grief over the incident. She revealed that Davion was a good friend of Mackenzie, and Dominic was the love of her life and a part of the family.

Natalie further revealed that her daughter had no memories of the crash. She stated how the terrible incident left a lasting impression on her daughter’s mental health. Natalie mentioned that the first three months were terrible for Mackenzie as she kept on crying and would only wear Dominic’s clothes. In her words:
"For three months after the accident, she would only wear his clothes. She would only eat the snacks he ate, and she would only listen to the music he wrote. She was lying in bed for three months crying, there was a shrine of him next to her with photos and things that he liked."
