Convicted murderer Mackenzie Shirilla has remained in the spotlight ever since Netflix released its true-crime documentary, The Crash, in May 2026. As viewers continue debating what could have driven the teenager to allegedly kill her boyfriend and friend in the deadly crash, new jailhouse recordings have continued surfacing online. In the latest undated phone call, Mackenzie sounded surprisingly cheerful while discussing her wish for Kim Kardashian to become her lawyer and defend her case.
The new audio obtained by PEOPLE is from an undated jailhouse log from the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center in Ohio, where Shirilla was reportedly detained during her 2023 trial. She can be heard speaking to an unidentified person on the line, as they discuss the growing public fascination around her case. They even cited an interview with her dead boyfriend, Dominic Russo's father, which was published by the Daily Mail.

At one point, the convicted teen suggested that Kim Kardashian may have seen the media coverage, saying, "Well, maybe Kim Kardashian's seen". The person on the line agrees, adding, "Yeah, maybe Kim will ... I mean, that's the only thing that might be good about the whole media thing. Maybe Kim will see it." Mackenzie can be heard laughing as she adds that she hoped the reality star and aspiring lawyer could help her legally.

The conversation later turned even lighter, with Mackenzie joking that she only wore Kim's clothing brand, SKIMS. While awaiting her sentence, the teen expressed her hope for getting legally represented by Kim as she "works hard [to help] innocent people get out of jail." Shirilla says:
"I don't know. You have to figure out because I'm real nervous and I want Kim Kardashian to be my lawyer... Tell her I buy all her SKIMS and I only wear SKIMS."

Despite Mackenzie's hopes, reports later claimed Kim Kardashian has no plans to get involved in the case. In case you missed it, the SKIMS founder has spent the past several years pursuing a career in law while also becoming one of the most high-profile celebrity advocates for criminal justice reforms in America. Although she is yet to become a fully licensed attorney, Kim has already completed California’s Law Office Study Program, under which she studied directly under practicing lawyers.

The reality star has been known to advocate for those she believes have been wrongfully convicted, as well as incarcerated people who have demonstrated rehabilitation. However, in Mackenzie Shirilla's case, sources reportedly told TMZ she declined any legal involvement with the convicted teen. A source told the outlet:
"Kim advocates for criminal justice reform by supporting individuals she believes were wrongfully convicted, as well as people within the prison system who have demonstrated rehabilitation and deserve a fair second chance. This case does not fall within her focus."

Mackenzie Shirilla, now 21, is currently serving two concurrent prison sentences of 15 years to life after being convicted in 2023 of murder, aggravated vehicular homicide, and related charges. Prosecutors argued she intentionally drove her Toyota Camry into a brick wall at nearly 100 mph in Strongsville, Ohio, after tensions in her relationship with Dominic Russo escalated.
Mackenzie Shirilla's first parole hearing will reportedly be held in 2037, when she will be 33 years old.
