Ohio Supreme Court has rejected Mackenzie Shirilla’s appeal

Mackenzie Shirilla’s legal team asked the Ohio Supreme Court to review her appeals after her sentencing. However, the request was dismissed on June 23, 2026. The attorneys said in the legal documents that they were seeking a review because of a calendar mistake. While the attorneys failed to meet the deadline of filing the challenge, they claimed that it happened because they did not look into the fact that 2024 was a leap year.

The Crash

While rejecting the review of the appeal, the court said that the legal team did not file the challenge on time, and the trial court was not wrong to determine that it was without jurisdiction to consider the filing. The court also stated that the arguments of Mackenzie Shirilla’s attorneys were not strong enough to allow a review.

The Ohio law allows any convicted defendant to challenge their conviction within 365 days. However, this is possible only after the trial transcripts are filed. In the case of Mackenzie Shirilla, the transcripts were first submitted in October 2023. While filing a new appeal, Mackenzie’s legal team said that they filed another transcript a few weeks after they filed the first one in October 2023. Mackenzie’s lawyers even claimed that assistance from a counsel at the trial could have helped to clear the criminal charges against her.

New records on Mackenzie Shirilla’s case emerged after the appeal was filed

Latest reports have claimed that an appeal to review her case was filed by Mackenzie Shirilla in April 2026. Notably, new records in the form of calls and text messages were released by the Strongsville Police Department in May 2026, shortly after the release of the Netflix documentary.

The Crash

The messages featured conversations between Mackenzie and her boyfriend, Dominic, where Mackenzie addressed the fact that she had blackouts years before the accident. Mackenzie claimed in the other texts that she wants to kill herself and also kill someone. Apart from all these, Mackenzie once told Dominic to treat the girl a little better, who is ready to die for him. In another message, Dominic alleged that he was hit by Mackenzie, who attempted to throw a rock at him.

The Crash

Following the release of the Netflix documentary, Mackenzie Shirilla’s father, Steve, was given administrative leave by the Mary Queen of Peace School. The school also informed the parents about their decision, saying that they are looking into the allegations that a teacher “demonstrated poor judgment.” The school said that the safety and trust of the students remain a priority for them, and they are taking all the concerns seriously.
