Maa Behen Early Review, Madhuri, Triptii And Dharna Are The Unapologetic Force Smashing Patriarchy

The much-awaited film, Maa Behen, starring Madhuri Dixit, Triptii Dimri and Dharna Durga, is streaming on Netflix. Produced by Abundantia Entertainment and Opening Image Films, Maa Behen is a crime-comedy directed by Suresh Triveni. Apart from the three leading ladies, the film also stars Ravi Kishan, Geetanjali Kulkarni and Arunoday Singh in pivotal roles. As the film is released on the OTT giant, let us take a look at its early reviews.

Maa Behen storyline

The film revolves around a chaotic household that follows three central characters: ‘Rekha’, played by Madhuri Dixit; ‘Jaya’, played by Triptii Dimri; and ‘Sushma’, played by Dharna Durga. Madhuri was seen in a raw, bold avatar as a mother. Widowed at 25, she breaks every mould of motherhood and is unapologetic about her deeds. On the other hand, Tripti and Dharna played their hot-blooded daughters.

The film opens with a tense call Rekha makes to her daughters in the middle of the night. The dark comedy follows the three pivotal characters as their lives are upended when a neighbourhood priest suddenly dies in their kitchen. As the quarrelling family is visited by curious neighbours, the trio manage to hide the dead body. What conspires is a fun and messy comedy drama of the mother and the estranged sisters.

Maa Behen early review

Maa Behen is touted as a comic ride in which each actor performs their scenes brilliantly. As Triptii marks her second collaboration with Madhuri Dixit after Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, people are eager to see their on-screen chemistry in the latest release. As per actor-turned-critic Kuldeep Gadhvi, Maa Behen will keep you emotionally invested till the end while tickling your funny bone.

He gave the film a four-star rating and said it blends comedy, crime, drama, suspense, and emotion into a single film. While Gadhvi heaped praise on Madhuri Dixit for her effortless acting and on-screen grace, he also called Tripti a true entertainer. Each and every dialogue is well thought out and immensely witty.

However, as per Gadhvi, Dharna was the surprise element in the film. She left a huge impact on people with her confidence and effortless performance. Despite sharing the screen with huge talents, Dharna makes a confident acting debut and more than holds her own. Sharing details about the same, Gadhvi wrote:

“Madhuri Dixit is simply magnificent. She brings grace, charm, and impeccable comic timing to the role. Triptii Dimri delivers one of her most entertaining performances. Ravi Kishan is a complete scene-stealer. Dharna Durga leaves a strong impression with a confident and believable performance. Maa Bahen is a delightful surprise and a complete package. It offers laughter, suspense, emotion, romance, and memorable performances, all wrapped in an engaging story.”

Maa Behen is a raw depiction of patriarchy

Rekha does everything single-handedly to raise her daughters after her husband’s death. However, every attempt to build a life for herself -- whether by selling nighties, running a tiffin service or starting a cyber cafe-- turns her into the subject of neighbourhood speculation. People are more interested in judging her clothes than discussing how she survived her life alone. With lewd graffiti written on the wall for Rekha to the neighbouring women’s taunts, Maa Behen talks about internalised patriarchy, which forces a woman to shame another.

Maa Behen is a fresh take on how Rekha smiles through every taunt as she wishes to survive in a society which is too shrewd and critical. Madhuri nails her role as a perfect seductress, who doesn’t care what people think about her. The film has no interest in reforming society’s self-made proclamations.
