Love Island USA is grabbing all the attention after it came back with Season 8 on June 2, 2026. The show started with 10 islanders entering the villa in the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji. Among the islanders, it was Sean Reifel who caught the most attention for having reportedly given up his stable job as a police officer to join the show. He was also blasted by Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Mayor J. William Reynolds for resigning from the police department. Now that Sean has been eliminated from the show, he has finally opened up about the allegations of his resignation.
Sean Reifel recently sat down for an interview where he opened up about how sad he was to leave during the June 7, 2026, episode of Love Island USA Season 8. He claimed that he did not see his time coming to an end so quickly. However, upon his exit, he was even more shocked to find thousands of headlines about him owing to Bethlehem, Pa., Mayor J. William Reynolds. Sean said he found Mayor Reynolds' allegations that he resigned from his position at the Bethlehem Police Department to attend the show “very shocking.” According to Sean, he already had “conversations early on” at work that he was going on the reality show. He said:
"I also didn't resign from my job. My intention was — and as we talked about prior to me leaving — I'm going to finish out my contract, and then I want to go into nursing and still pursue my passion of helping people."

Sean found it even more “off-putting” when Mayor Reynolds spoke out once again after he was eliminated from the show. For those unaware, the Mayor had opened up about whether Sean Reifel would be welcome back at the police force if he chose to return. Sean addressed this, saying:
"They had quoted him saying, 'If he wants to crawl back.' And at that point, it honestly just felt like I was dehumanised. It was just like, well, this is just mean. If your intention was to hurt my feelings, you succeeded. That sucked.”

As of now, Sean Reifel has made it clear that he has no plans to return to the Bethlehem Police Department anytime soon. This is because he doesn't know how the community feels as a whole, whether he will go back to being a police officer there, or whether people will have some sort of animosity towards him because of what Mayor Reynolds said. Sean added that his sights are actually still set on nursing school. He hopes to get back in school and pass anatomy this time so that he can get his career rolling. His preference for becoming a nurse was also highlighted by the fact that he said, “Scrubs are a little bit lighter than a duty belt.”

It is worth noting that apart from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Mayor J. William Reynolds, Sean Reifel had also received significant flak for supposedly resigning from his job at the police department from his former supervisor, Bethlehem Police Chief Michelle Kott. She claimed that Sean had resigned only nine months after his swearing-in. And although she admitted that she “loves Sean” and considered him a “good guy” and “great officer,” it did not stop her from publicly blasting him over the timing and manner of his resignation. Michelle was quoted as saying:

"I love Sean; he's a good guy, he was a great officer, but I'm disappointed. We work so incredibly hard to try to recruit the best people we can to be part of the Bethlehem Police Department. At this time, I don't think there'd be a department that would be willing to allow someone to leave for 'x' amount of weeks to go on a television show when everyone's hurting right now, and overtime is being utilised to fill those gaps. Officers are getting burnt out. It's just a bad look to me."
