'Love Island USA' S8 Executive Producer Dies During Production, Shared Post About Show Before Death

Love Island USA premiered on June 2, 2026 (ET) and since then has been creating a lot of buzz. The show has brought a bunch of single and attractive contestants known as ‘islanders’, trying to find their perfect match. Additionally, they can also be seen competing for a USD 100,000 grand prize. While the show has become an ideal summer watch for most viewers, behind the scenes, a tragedy has struck on the set as it was revealed that a key member of the Love Island USA production team has passed away. 

Love Island USA's Executive Producer passes away 

According to reports, Love Island USA Executive Producer, James Barker, passed away last week, in June 2026, in Fiji during the production of the hit reality show. ITV America and Peacock revealed that his death occurred after he suffered “an unexpected medical emergency.” Reportedly, James will be honoured during the upcoming episode of Love Island USA, which will air on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. They claimed that James' unimaginable loss has been felt deeply not just across the show's production but throughout ITV and Peacock. The network added:

"He was a beloved and greatly valued member of our collective family whose kindness, talent and dedication left an indelible mark on all of us and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. We extend our heartfelt condolences to James’ partner, family, friends and colleagues.”

As of now, the exact details surrounding James Barker's death still remain unclear. According to the late executive producer's LinkedIn, he joined ITV America sometime around August 2020. Since then, he spent several years working on the Love Island USA franchise on and off, but started in his position full-time at the beginning of this year, in January 2026.

Although, the network did not reveal the exact date that James Barker died, a quick look at his Instagram reveals that he had made a post about the current season of Love Island USA not long before his death. In the black-and-white picture that James posted, he can be seen standing alongside three other people whom he referred to as ‘models.’ These people were Ben Thursby-Palmer, Courtney Meredith, and Blake Garrett. Well, despite calling them models, it seems like all of them were part of Love Island USA Season 8's production team. 

In the snap, James can be seen wearing a floral shirt with matching shorts. He paired the outfit with a cap and flip flops, keeping things casual. Celebrating the launch of the ongoing show, James wrote on the caption: 

"We come to Fiji for magic. We come to @loveislandusa to laugh, to cry, to care. Our islanders feel like the best part of us, and stories feel perfect and powerful… because here… they are. Hope you’re all enjoying the new season brought to you by a huge squad of brilliant people, including the three models standing beside me.”

As per reports, James was 40 years old at the time of his death. When he started working on Love Island USA in 2020, he started as a story producer before serving as an executive producer. He had contributed to the show's production and oversaw its soundtrack. James had started his career in the television industry at Leftfield Pictures in 2011. There, he served as a producer on projects like Counting Cars, Forged in Fire, and Pawn Stars. At ITV America, he had produced Queer Eye before his work on Love Island USA and Love Island Games. He has also worked on shows for Scout Productions, Sharp Entertainment and Kinetic Content.
