Lionel Richie Was 'Kicked In The Stomach' After A 'Disastrous' Fight Broke Between His Two Ex-Wives

Lionel Richie recalled the ‘disastrous’ argument between his ex-wives, Brenda Harvey and Diane Alexander
It was in 1975 that Lionel Richie married his college sweetheart, Brenda Harvey, and in 1983 the couple adopted Nicole Richie. However, after some years, issues arose in Lionel and Brenda’s marriage, and they separated. However, while being married to Brenda, Richie was involved with another woman, named Diane Alexander.
In his memoir, Truly: An Inspirational Journey Through the Life of a Musical Legend, Richie addressed one of the biggest scandals of his life, when Brenda confronted Richie and Diane. The 76-year-old shared details of his then-love triangle and wrote that, while there was a lot of tension, he took off to a beach and went into hiding to escape the turmoil in his life.
He later went back to LA to visit Alexander at her Beverly Hills home, and the then-dating couple got the biggest shock of their lives when Brenda landed outside the apartment. Recalling the confrontation that happened, Richie shared:
“When the door opens, Brenda is standing there. There is a massive confrontation. Diane is in total shock and I'm trying to leave, to draw Brenda away. It's the most awful screaming match of my life, and it's all in this small entryway."

In his memoir, Richie revealed that he left during the fight and tried to take Brenda with him, but she went back and kept fighting Alexander. He also recalled that the neighbors called the police. Lionel informed the police that "he was kicked in the stomach area" by Brenda during the argument. Brenda was booked on suspicion of corporal injury to a spouse, resisting arrest and battery.
In his memoir, Lionel recalled the incident as ‘ugly and disastrous’. He also added that the most painful part of the whole incident was that "Brenda was heartbroken." Calling it the saddest day of his life, Richie wrote:
“We all deserved a pass because we didn’t know what the story was going to be. It was just raw, ugly, and disastrous. Prior to that morning, I recall there was a cloud of uncertainty as to whether I wanted to try to reconcile and not be separated."
Five years after the incident, Lionel and Brenda divorced in 1993, ending their 18-year marriage. Two years later, he married Diane Alexander. The couple went on to welcome two children, son Miles Richie and daughter Sofia Richie. However, Lionel and Alexander got divorced in 2004. Richie has been with Swiss model Lisa Parigi since 2014.
