The politician's official X (formerly Twitter) page shared the sad news in an official statement. As per the statement, he succumbed to "a brief and sudden illness." Amid the outpouring of grief, an interest has been sparked in his personal life, particularly his relationship status following his split from his ex, Sylvia.
Who is Lindsey Graham's ex, Sylvia? Why did their marriage never happen?
Lindsey Graham's only publicly known ex is a woman named Sylvia. As for her identity, she was a German Lufthansa flight attendant of Hungarian descent, whom the US Senator met during his late 20s while living in Germany. Lindsey was stationed in the country during his US Air Force posting at Rhein-Main Air Base from 1984 to 1988. Lindsey and Sylvia became acquainted after the woman she was living with married Lindsey's roommate. It was pure fate that the two of them met and fell for each other.
Lindsey mentioned in his memoir, My Story, that his relationship with Sylvia became "serious quickly," and they almost got married. The politician strongly considered proposing to the flight attendant; however, that ultimately never happened. After a year-long courtship, the duo parted ways because of their different priorities. They didn't want to do a long-distance relationship when Lindsey had to go back to him South Carolina. She couldn't leave Germany for her ailing mother and he would t leave his country as his entire life was there. He stated:
"I am a South Carolina boy who needed to go home...Her mother was elderly, and I wasn't going to stay in Germany. I didn't think she wanted to come back to South Carolina."

Sylvia was the only one Lindsey Graham had been deeply involved with and even considered spending the rest of his life. Before her, he dated a few women, but none of those relationships was too serious. As per his memoir, he had a girlfriend named Debbie in law school and dated two more during his time in the Air Force in Germany: one was a JAG officer named Carol, who later serve as Colin Powell's staff, and the other was Sylvia. Sharing his regret at having to let Sylvia go, Lindsey Graham noted, "I haven't been lucky" when it comes to finding a wife.
Why did Lindsey Graham remain single after breakup with Sylvia?
After his split from Sylvia, Lindsey Graham realised that marriage was a difficult deal for him because of his political career and family circumstances. During his 2016 presidential campaign, the senator from South Carolina addressed his lifelong bachelorhood. He revealed that he was too focused on his political aims that he lacked time for anything else. He jovially stated:
"If you are looking for Camelot, I'm not your guy. If you're looking for glitz and glamour, I'm probably the worst choice in the bunch. If you are looking for a determined person to be president, I think I can fill that bill."

At that time, there was a lot of chatter surrounding Lindsey Graham's possibility of becoming the US President, which led to questions regarding who his first lady would be. As he had no lover, he suggested he would have a "rotating first lady", which generated immense buzz. Lindsey then explained that his sister and his female friends could fill the spot turn by turn. As his comment left people confused, Lindsey explained that it was just a light-hearted joke. His comment could be read as:
"Well, I've got a sister. She could play that role if necessary. I've got a lot of friends. We'll have a rotating first lady...It was a joke."
Beyond the fun and jokes, Lindsey did have serious reasons for not getting hitched. At age 21, he became the legal guardian of his 13-year-old sister, Darline, after both of their parents died within 15 months. Hence, he had to serve as the man of the house from early on. Additionally, he felt that "the right girl" didn't have time for him, and those who did weren't his perfect match. Hence, he remained single until his death at 71.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Lindsey Graham's family as they deal with his loss.
