Rushville return and the search for the truth behind ‘Hal Jordan’s’ death
Lanterns Episode 6 brings the story back to the central question from the start of the season. The mystery is the murder of 'Hal Jordan'. The episode moves between the present life of 'John Stewart' in Midway City and his return to Rushville, where the death continues to raise questions.
Ten years after giving the Green Lantern ring back to the Guardian, 'John Stewart' has built a different life. He runs a company with his brother 'Marcus' that designs large-scale panic rooms and secure bunkers. He is pitching the Midway City council to redirect thirty million dollars in federal funds meant for weapons into building forty shelters with sustainable air, water, and food.
His plan is interrupted when his mother, ‘Bernadette,’ tells him that 'Hal Jordan' has been in contact with her while serving a prison sentence for the Rushville incident. 'John Stewart' goes back to Rushville and finds 'Hal Jordan' at the local cafe at the same booth where 'Zoe' once sat. The meeting turns tense.
'Hal Jordan' says he took the fall, served the time, and that they should be square. He provokes 'John Stewart' by suggesting he was scared to keep the ring. 'John Stewart' punches him and leaves. 'Hal Jordan' asks him not to tell anyone he is back. Soon after, 'Sheriff Kerry Kane' calls 'John Stewart' with the news. 'Hal Jordan' has been found frozen at the Rushville High football field. Cameras were off because it was not a game day.
'Kerry Kane' reveals that she exchanged letters with 'Hal Jordan' in prison and that they grew close after her divorce. She gives 'John Stewart' the key to the house 'Hal Jordan' rented. Inside the house, a chair faces the entrance, and the place is rigged against intruders. It shows that 'Hal Jordan' lived in fear because many people in town blamed him for Rushville. At the morgue, they learn that 'Hal Jordan' was shot in the head with a nine-millimeter pistol and had a broken nose from the punch.
The Lockbox, the funeral, and why 'John Stewart' creates the Halogram
At the morgue, 'John Stewart' and 'Kerry Kane' receive the belongings of 'Hal Jordan,' which include a key to a storage unit. Inside the unit, there is only one thing, a lockbox that holds a pocket dimension. The box needs the live voice of 'Hal Jordan' to open. 'Kerry Kane' plays an old voice message from 'Hal Jordan,' but the box detects it as a recording and issues a final warning to step away. The secret inside remains protected.
Before dinner with 'Kerry Kane' and her grown son 'Noah Macon', 'John Stewart' turns on a Green Lantern signal that 'Hal Jordan' had installed in Rushville. The signal does not bring immediate help. It brings angry locals, including 'Billy Macon', the former husband of 'Kerry Kane', who demand the light be turned off.
A fight follows, and 'John Stewart' wins. 'Kerry Kane' arrests him for the incident. In his cell, 'John Stewart' is visited by 'Guy Gardner', the current Green Lantern who answered the signal. 'Guy Gardner' explains that the ring of 'Hal Jordan' was decommissioned and locked away on Oa by the Guardians and that his own ring was newly forged for him. He also reveals that someone has escaped from the space prison that held 'Sinestro'.
Since 'Hal Jordan' was in prison at the time, he could not be responsible. 'Guy Gardner' says a murder case is bad optics for the Corps but agrees to help bury 'Hal Jordan' in his old uniform and ring. The funeral is almost empty. Only 'Kerry Kane' and 'Carol Ferris' attend. 'John Stewart' reads a eulogy written by 'Hal Jordan' himself that says, “For even in the blackest of nights, I urge you to carry on. The worlds counting on you. I am counting on you.” It ends with, “I hope I mattered.”
After the funeral, 'John Stewart' makes a deliberate choice. He digs up the grave and takes the ring from the coffin. He puts the ring on his own finger and activates it. The ring has only five percent power left. It creates a 'Halogram,' a projection that carries the appearance, voice, and knowledge of 'Hal Jordan'.
The figure at the end is not a resurrected body. It is a ring-generated imprint that can recognize new information. It looks at the corpse and reacts with alarm. 'John Stewart' has crossed a moral boundary because the dead Lantern still holds answers no living witness can provide. By summoning the 'Halogram,' he pulls himself back into the responsibility he spent ten years avoiding and gains a partner to investigate the murder.
