She was an epitome of perseverance. She was an epitome of bravery. She was an epitome of grace. Note the usage of ‘past tense’ in the previous three sentences. The world woke up to a sad news today, Raj Kapoor’s wife and the head of the Kapoor khaandaan, Krishna Raj Kapoor passes away at the age of 87, due to cardiac arrest.
Marital bliss didn’t come easy for Krishna Raj Kapoor. In spite of multiple linkup rumours of her late husband and a prominent one (with Nargis), Krishna never gave up. She was a woman who chose to be with her husband when the tides were rough in their relationship and stood by the family like a pillar. When the world was talking about Raj Kapoor’s affairs, Krishna Raj Kapoor was busy ignoring the rumours and playing an ‘unsung hero’ by silently supporting her family from behind. On this sad day, let us take you on her life’s journey through her family pictures, which proves her mettle as a family person. Take a look:
Raj Kapoor married Krishna Malhotra at the age of 22 in 1946. Often regarded as the 'First Lady' of Bollywood, Krishna Raj Kapoor, as she was later called, was a quiet and conservative person. This is the reason she remained behind-the-scenes all the time. Krishna was Raj Kapoor’s father, the late Prithviraj Kapoor’s maternal uncle’s daughter. They had an arranged marriage and selflessly supported Raj Kapoor throughout his career. Together they have 5 children- three sons, Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor and two daughters Ritu Nanda and Rima Jain. Speaking about her parents' relationship, her daughter Rima Jain once shared in an interview with Filmfare:
“No matter what was said and written, Papa loved mother deeply. The truth is that all life he remained obsessed with her. He may not have expressed it to her the way she’d have liked him to. She may not have been a big part of his life. But whatever Raj Kapoor did, he came back home. His love for her was immense. He’d even press her legs and joke, ‘Raj Kapoor ka kya haal bana diya! Meri biwi mujhe pair dabane lagaa rahi hai. Ghar ki murgi dal barabar!’ He loved celebrating New Years because it also happened to be mom’s birthday.”
From the very beginning, Krishna ensured that a family that eats together, stays together! Hence began her quest of ensuring that her family is tied and well-connected with each other. From the very early days of her marriage, till her last days on earth, Krishna Kapoor kept her values intact.
Though you would hardly see Krishna Kapoor come out in the limelight, these are a few rare pictures from the archives, wherein Krishna is seen having a gala time with husband, Raj Kapoor and yesteryear actor, Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand.
In a rather rare picture of the Kapoor household (the last picture), you will spot most of the yesteryear Kapoors in one frame. Some of their grandkids were not even born then! You will spot Krishna Kapoor sitting cross-legged beside Raj Kapoor, second one from the right.
More than the sons themselves, the Kapoor bahus have time and again shared how much the sons admired Krishna ji. In a beautiful picture of Rishi Kapoor and Krishna Kapoor dancing together, bahu Neetu Kapoor captioned the picture as:
"His love n devotion for his mother and God is unimaginable !!! He will have his motherand God's blessings always."
These pictures truly steal our heart. Looking at the pictures, one can easily gauge how loved Krishna Kapoor was. Grandaughter and Ranbir Kapoor's sister, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni's single Instagram post spoke a thousand words on behalf of the entire Kapoor family. Sharing the last picture, she wrote:
"Love you so much RIP."
It is indeed an account of utmost satisfaction and pleasure when one gets to play with grandkids. Krishna Raj Kapoor was fortunate enough to have played with great grandkids as well. In the pictures above, you all spot an always-smiling Krishna posing with her great grandkids.
This is Krishna Raj Kapoor’s journey in life. Being the head of the family, she ensured that her family always remains intact and proved to be the glue which kept the family together. Aged 87, have you noticed her sheer grace, calm and subtleness? This can only come from a person, who has great moral values and dedication towards family. While it must be a very difficult time for the Kapoor family, our heartiest condolences are with them. Rest in peace, Krishna Raj Kapoor, until next time…
