Kouri Richins Sentenced To Life In Prison, Why And How Did She Poison Her Husband Eric Richins?

Utah-based author Kouri Richins was sentenced to lifetime imprisonment at her sentencing on May 13, 2026. For the unversed, Kouri was arrested on May 8, 2023, by authorities in Summit County, with the charges of killing her husband by lacing his drink with poison, a crime that she allegedly repeated a week after the same kind of trial.

From that day to the present time, she maintained her stance that she was not the one to murder her husband, and during the hearing of May 13, 2026, she said that she would not be blamed for something that she never did. Kouri addressed her three sons and mentioned that she will do anything she has to do to fight these charges, no matter how long it takes, and it's not because she has something to prove to anyone but to three of them.

Why did Kouri Richins allegedly kill her husband, Eric Richins?

On the contrary, reportedly, Kouri and Eric's three sons don't want to see her out of jail, and in the court documents, they expressed their fear for safety. As on May 13, 2026, her hearing took place, the incident again hit the headlines, with people wanting to know why and how Kouri ended up killing her husband. So, here's a look at what has been revealed in this case. Kouri and Eric got married back in 2013, and during that time, they already had a son. On their wedding day, they reportedly signed a prenup, according to which, they didn't have any rights to each other's present or future income, property and assets, only if Eric hadn't died when they were legally married. His then company, C&E Masonry, would transfer to Kouri.

Well, 6 years later, in 2019, Kouri started her real estate business, where she would buy homes, fix them and sell them with profits. While Kouri's family members revealed eventually that she was doing the best in her professional life, a report by 48 Hours quoted Eric's spokesperson, mentioning that by 2022, Kouri's business was drowning and had millions of dollars of debt. Several reports claimed that she started using Eric's accounts and was using his money without his knowledge. As reports claimed, by 2020, Eric had an idea that his money was being misused, which led him to create the Eric Richins Living Trust and keep his sister, Katie Richins-Benson, as trustee, so that his children are in safe hands.

There had also been a report that two days after Eric passed away, Kouri and his sister had a massive fallout, regarding her calling a locksmith to access a safe in the house. When Eric's sister, Amy, reportedly tried to stop her, she reportedly hit her in the nose and neck. So, while the actual reason for Kouri to allegedly kill her husband isn't known, prosecutors' allegations and reports add up to the fact that there might be some financial motives for the author to kill her husband.

How did Kouri Richins kill her husband, Eric Richins?

It was in 2022, when, reportedly, Kouri asked her housekeeper to bring fentanyl for her. The housekeeper has been described as 'C.L' in the court documents. Reportedly, on Valentine's Day that year, Kouri provided Eric a sandwich laced with fentanyl, as per the prosecutors. That day, he reportedly broke out into the hives and faced difficulty in breathing. After he had lunch, he was feeling unwell and fell asleep. As per the court documents, Eric told one of his friends that he believed that Kouri was trying to poison him, a claim that she denied and said in court that she simply ordered lunch that day for both of them, and her husband felt unwell and fell asleep after the same.

Before that, in February, Kouri reportedly asked C.L to provide her with stronger fentanyl, which she referred to as "some of the Michael Jackson stuff." Weeks later, on March 4, 2022, Eric Richins passed away. According to Kouri, back then, she made her husband a cocktail, and when her son was having a nightmare, she slept with him. Kouri said that when she came back, Eric was unresponsive, and she called 911. The paramedics reached their home at around 3.30 AM and revealed that Eric was dead. The autopsy results came around April 2022, confirming that Eric had passed away from a fentanyl overdose. Reportedly, it takes 3 ng/ml for fentanyl to take someone's life, while in Eric's case, his blood contained 15 ng/ml fentanyl.
