Kelly Clarkson called out a Brooklyn toy store named Art of Play, alleging she was treated badly there. The singer and talk show host took to X on October 10, 2026, and compared her experience to a famous scene from the movie Pretty Woman. Her complaint about the Brooklyn toy store has become a bigger controversy, and the store has now shared its side of the story. However, it seems Kelly isn't buying it.

Brooklyn store claimed the 'Singing Bird' Kelly Clarkson wanted was not for sale

Art of Play has now replied to Kelly Clarkson's accusations in an Instagram post. The store took to its social media handle later on October 11, 2026, and penned a long post claiming that the 'Singing Bird' they have named Molly was not for sale. The store said the singer visited and asked about buying the one-of-a-kind singing and dancing bird automaton. The store also said Molly plays an important role in its magic shows.

According to the store, Molly is permanently attached to the wall and is not for sale. The store also said the bad experience Kelly Clarkson described "would resonate with anyone who has ever felt judged in a shop." They also said everyone is welcome at their store, whether they're just looking around or buying something. Art of Play said its doors are open to everyone, and it greets every visitor with an invitation to "pick things up and play."

The store added that many people stay there for hours enjoying the puzzles, games, and toys. The store said it was surprised that its small local business was "attacked by 8 million people who have never visited our store." It called the experience "surreal." They concluded the post quoting Kelly Clarkson's song and were quoted as saying:

"It's been a surreal experience to be the focus of such widespread outrage after just one mention by a celebrity. Thanks to all our friends for their support, and welcome to all the curious folks who have discovered us amidst the drama. We're going to keep our heads down, and hopefully, we can clear things up with Kelly someday. As a talented popular singer once said, 'What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.'"

Kelly Clarkson hits back at the store, calling them a liar and rude

Hours after Art of Play issued the statement, Kelly Clarkson responded to their note, calling them a "liar". The singer alleged that there was a price tag on the wall. She further claimed that when she asked the store about the item, they not only confirmed that the 'Singing Bird' was for sale, but also asserted that she couldn't buy it. She said the person at the store looked down on her and claimed it was USD 15,000, and they could bring her something more "comparable" for her.

Kelly Clarkson shot down Art of Play and questioned whether that entire conversation didn't happen. She further called them rude and a liar. She also countered their small-business allegations and said she has always supported them. Kelly further claimed that she was there to buy something. However, being a small business doesn't give them a right to mistreat anyone. She was quoted as saying:

"That all never happened, and now it’s not for sale. Okay, cool. So you’re not only rude, but you’re also a liar. Got it. And by the way, I obviously support small businesses because I was literally at a small business trying to purchase things. I love small businesses and know they are important, and I always support them, but you don’t get a free pass to treat people less than in your store just because you are a small business."

Kelly Clarkson concluded the post by saying it is not difficult to be kind. She went on to clarify that she usually doesn't "blast people" on social media. However, the experience forced her to speak up. She ended the post by asserting that while the store was "cool", the people there were not.
