American broadcaster Kaylee Hartung is currently in the spotlight for her role as a sideline reporter for Super Bowl LX. She has been increasingly active in NFL postseason coverage, including reporting from the sidelines at recent divisional-round games. Beyond football, she is also covering freestyle skiing (aerials and moguls) in the ongoing 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics. The 40-year-old former ESPN reporter's latest career milestones have sparked an interest in her personal life, particularly her partner and family. Here's everything we know about the biggest tragedy that wrecked her family.

Kaylee Hartung lost her father, Joe Hartung, in a tragic plane crash in May 1996. She was just 10 years old when the unfortunate incident occurred. Kaylee shared the experience during an appearance on Jay Glazer's podcast, Mental Wealth. Joe Hartung was a pilot and former member of the Royal Netherlands Air Force who owned an aviation company in Baton Rouge. He died while performing at an air show in Lafayette, Louisiana. Kaylee, along with her mother and brother, was among the approximately 13,000 to 30,000 spectators who witnessed the crash during the final maneuver of the show.
Kaylee was devastated at the death of her father, as he was the man she loved the most. The fact that he was the only one who was present on the plane and who met such a tragic end seemed unacceptable to the NBC host. At the time of the plane crash, the 10-year-old Kaylee didn't believe her dad was no more, as for a girl child, her father is often someone she sees as a superhuman, one who is capable of everything and is "invincible." Even years after Joe Hartung's death, the 40-year-old Kaylee remembers each and every detail of the black day as if it just happened yesterday. She shared:
"There's a lot to unpack about the emotions of watching a plane crash happen when it's the man you love the most, and he's the only one in the plane. But in that moment, thinking back on it at 10 years old, I didn't think he was dead. Because to me, he was invincible. I saw the plane hit the ground and I remember all the feelings."

Kaylee Hartung was frustrated with media outlets like CNN, who allegedly covered her father, Joe Hartung's demise insensitively. Kaylee stated that the way the news media covered the crash, felt like they were treating it as a "spectacle" rather than honouring her father's life. She felt the reports lacked humanity and focused only on the event, which drove her 'why' in life, to tell other people's stories with the depth and heart they deserve. It was that incident which inspired her to become a journalist. Sharing her emotions, Kaylee told Jay Glazer:
"This report was not about the man who died. My father's death was treated as an event. Watching it at 10 years old, I didn't understand why that's the way the story was told or why his life wasn't honoured."
