Kathleen Turner breaks her silence on Michael Douglas' 'secret lovers' statement
Michael Douglas revealed that he and Kathleen Turner lied about the true nature of their relationship for the last 40 years. The 82-year-old actor explained that the chemistry he had with Turner was so strong that the audience has been certain for years that they were in a relationship while making the film. However, they denied it for years. He added that they were secret lovers while making the 1984 movie Romancing the Stone. Reacting to his 'secret lovers' statement, Kathleen told PEOPLE:
"Good heavens, what a fuss about something 40 years ago! I love Michael, and I look forward to enjoying the book."

Michael admitted that he fell hard for Turner. He writes in his memoir, One Helluva Ride, "We found each other first as friends, then as co-stars, and finally as lovers." Michael mentioned in his memoir how, after long days on set, he and Turner would go to dinner together or with a group before he would sneak into her hotel room after everyone was asleep. He added that neither the film’s director Robert Zemeckis nor Douglas’ costar Danny DeVito were aware of what was happening between him and Turner.
However, their secret romance ended after Michael’s then-estranged wife, Diandra, brought their son, Cameron, for a visit to Mexico. He said Diandra suspected something was going on between him and Turner. At that time, Turner didn’t want to interfere, and Douglas ultimately went back to his marriage for the sake of his son.
According to Michael Douglas, the reason behind keeping his romance with Turner a secret was to protect his family. They told the public for about 40 years that they had never actually had a romantic relationship. However, the reality was different. Douglas mentioned that even a few years ago, Turner continued to stick to the same public story. In that interview, Turner admitted she really wanted Douglas and was attracted to him, but she knew she couldn't be with him because he was still married. An excerpt from One Helluva Ride can be read as:
"It was a lie meant to protect my wife and son, a lie we told the world for 40 years. In fact, during a People magazine interview only a few years ago, Kathleen held to it, saying, 'Oh I was yearning, babe, but he was still married... It was that wonderful sexual tension, you know?'"

As the filming of Romancing the Stone was wrapping up, Kathleen met property developer Jay Weiss. Explaining how things started between them, Turner shared that Jay helped her in finding an apartment and, to thank him, she invited him to lunch. The former couple tied the knot on August 4, 1984. Three years later, in 1987, the duo welcomed their daughter, Rachel. Turner and Jay called it quits after two decades of marriage and got divorced in 2007.

Kathleen’s daughter, Rachel, released her debut album Dear Love in 2012, and in 1989, she made her acting debut with the film Little Monsters, co-starring Ben Savage and her brother, Fred Savage. Turner advised her daughter to be brave and speak up whenever the situation around her is not okay.
