Kate Gosselin Told Son Collin He 'Broke' Their Family, Was 'Horrified' By His Weight Gain At 12

In the book, which was published on October 13, 2026, Collin revealed several unknown facets of his “dark” and “violent” childhood. Collin took several digs at his mom, Kate Plus 8 alum Kate Gosselin, and accused her of abusing him. He also revealed the four brutal words his mom told him when he was only 12 years old.
Collin Gosselin recalls his tense interaction with his mother, Kate Gosselin, at the mental institution
Collin Gosselin, who is currently 22 years old, still remembers the tense interaction he had with his mother, Kate Gosselin, when she came to see him at the mental institution when he was 12. He said that Kate told him, “You broke our family.” He also recalled that she appeared visibly disappointed when they came face to face.
Collin believes that Kate was “horrified” by the weight he had gained during his stay at the institution. Explaining his weight gain, he said that his mom had already warned him about the consequences of what would happen if he wasn't healthy beforehand. However, he did not have much of a choice when it came to his meals. In his words:
“She warned us about eating healthy and what would happen if we didn’t. But I didn’t really have a choice here. I ate what they gave me. And now, well, I was fat.”
Collin remembered that he and Kate shared a “stiff” hug, following which he told her he missed her. However, Kate simply ignored his words. He said that there was a doctor present in the room with them who mentioned that Collin “lashed out a couple of times." But according to Collin, he would only have such “crying fits” since he wanted to go home really badly.
The doctor then informed Kate that her son was responding well to the program. Kate thanked him by taking his first name, Jack, leaving Collin completely shocked. He said that he shifted uncomfortably in his seat, wondering when his mom and the doctor got on a first-name basis. It also made him question how often they stayed in touch.

After the doctor left the room, Collin Gosselin said that he showed his mom a number of origami gifts that he had prepared for his seven siblings. However, Kate refused all of them. This made Collin’s stomach drop. He claimed that “these gifts were my chance to remind them that I existed.” He also came to the horrifying realization that if she didn't take those, “she wasn't going to take me.”
Collin made a “desperate” plea to Kate Gosselin to take him home, but she told him that it “wouldn't be appropriate.” Kate allegedly told him that his siblings were “doing so much better” without Collin present there. Later, Kate bragged to him about the cakes that she had ordered for the rest of her sextuplets on their birthday. She also shared their family’s upcoming summer break plans with Collin. Kate then added, “You are here because of you. You broke our family.”
Collin revealed in his memoir that this wasn't the first time he had heard those harsh words from his mom. But this time he couldn't stop himself from sobbing while covering his face with his hands. When the doctor re-entered the room after this, Kate told him that she was leaving. Collin shared that it was the last time he saw his mother to date. He said:
“I don’t remember saying goodbye. A nurse escorted me back to the pod. That was the first and last time my mom ever visited me in the institution.”
