Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleThe long-running family rift between Jon Gosselin and Kate Gosselin is back in the spotlight after their son, Collin Gosselin, announced a memoir detailing his childhood and estrangement from his mother. As anticipation builds for In the Shadow of Eight, old interviews in which Jon accused Kate of trying to "erase" Collin from the family have resurfaced, renewing interest in one of reality television's most public family disputes.
Collin recently revealed that his memoir will explore what viewers of Jon & Kate Plus 8 never saw behind the cameras. In announcing the book, the 22-year-old said that while millions watched him grow up on television, much of his story remained untold. The memoir follows years of public allegations by Collin, who has accused Kate of physical and emotional abuse, although Kate has repeatedly denied those claims.
Long before the memoir announcement, Jon publicly criticized Kate's decision to place Collin in a behavioral health institution in 2016. In multiple interviews, Jon alleged that Kate isolated their son from his siblings and attempted to remove him from family life altogether.

Speaking about the situation, Jon claimed Kate was "trying to erase him," arguing that Collin had effectively disappeared from both the family's daily life and the public image presented through their reality television brand. During his 2019 appearance on the Dr. Oz Show, Jon scathingly criticized his ex-wife for sending Collin away for a behavioral rehabilitation program. He alleged at the time:
"Kate institutionalized him without a diagnosis and then created a diagnosis. He did not need to be in an institution. Just because he was a difficult child did not mean he needed to be sent away against my will, against my rights. I did not know where he went. It took me two and a half years to find him. It took me another year to get him out."
Jon also accused his ex-wife of creating what he described as parental and sibling alienation, alleging that Collin was prevented from maintaining relationships with several of his brothers and sisters. Collin, who was just 15 at the time, was allegedly banned from seeing his other siblings. Jon said:
"There is no contact between Collin and his other siblings... So the problem right now is we have parent alienation and we have sibling alienation."
Jon further addressed the matter during his 2020 appearance on Alec Lace's First Class Fatherhood podcast. The father of eight revealed that he had already gone through nine different attorneys and spent nearly USD 1.3 million during the 12-year custody battle.
When Kate and Jon divorced in 2009, the former was granted custody of all eight children that the couple shared. However, with time, Kate's relationship with Collin grew increasingly strained, and things reached a breaking point after Kate completely alienated a 12-year-old Collin by putting him at the Fairmount Behavioral Health Institute in Philadelphia.
In 2018, Jon was awarded custody of Collin after he left the behavioral health program. By the time he was released to live with his father, Collin was 14 years old, having spent more than two years inside the institution, and he wanted nothing to do with his mother.

For Kate's part, however, she has consistently maintained that placing Collin in a behavioral treatment facility was necessary because of what she described as his "unpredictable and violent behavior." Even in 2024, when Collin publicly accused his mother of abuse, the reality star's attorney maintained that she had never intentionally harmed her son, saying she acted to protect both herself and the rest of the family.
Collin has decided he will no longer stay silent about the dark truth of his and his family's life, especially when it comes to the various ways his mother allegedly made their lives a nightmare. He previously said he no longer has meaningful relationships with most of his siblings and wishes they truly knew him beyond the public narrative.

Collin's memoir, In the Shadow of Eight, is expected to revisit his years inside one of reality TV's most famous families. The former Jon & Kate Plus 8 star has also alleged in the book that Kate was romantically involved with her current partner, Steve Neild, long before their relationship became public.
Collin and Kate's new fallout has reignited years-old speculations surrounding the famous Gosselin family's highly publicized split.
