'Kara' Review, Dhanush's Raw Performance And Music Save A Done-to-Death Storyline From Sinking

Tamil action thriller, Kara, has arrived in theatres on April 30, 2026. It marks the first collaboration between Dhanush and Vignesh Raja. The latter is well-known for his work on films like Por Thozhil. Dhanush has experimented with different subjects over the last few years. Back in 2025, viewers had the opportunity to see a new side of the actor in Kuberaa, Idli Kadai, and Tere Ishk Mein.

Kara also brings out something unique from Dhanush. His performance is the one thing that will make the audience sit for more than two hours despite having a familiar storyline with themes like crime and heist. Keep reading to know if Kara deserves a watch on the big screen!

Dhanush is the saving grace of Kara, with a good screen presence

Dhanush

It has become a common thing for many films to be remembered for certain characters, even if the plot does not make anyone interested. The same thing can be said for Kara. Dhanush saves this heist thriller from sinking by making his presence felt until the end. He has a lot to do when it comes to taking the storyline forward.

Dhanush

The actor can undoubtedly express a wide range of emotions on screen, and viewers can easily connect with everything that he is going through. He even controls his feelings in certain portions, making anyone fall in love with his performance. While his anger in Tere Ishk Mein was extremely intense, he presents it in a different form in Kara. Although, the character’s writing might remind people of a few of his previous films, the overall result will not disappoint at the same time.

Kara has a familiar storyline, except that it takes a different route

Kara

The main plot of Kara is something that people have witnessed many times over the years. It follows the rise of a man, involved in any kind of activity, to a hero or a crusader, who stands for his family or the people that he cares about. All of them end on the same note. The only thing that is different this time is the character and the circumstances that force him to start fighting for those who are suffering a lot.

The man in Kara is Dhanush. The actor portrays a thief who is an expert at stealing from the richest families. Situations take a different turn for him when he is found by the cops, leaving his wife completely shocked. The reputation that he had in front of his better half now does not exist anymore. But he escapes and enters his village, where he finds his father buried in debt. He eventually decides to reclaim his family’s dignity.

Vignesh Raja’s direction holds the attention in certain portions

Apart from directing, Vignesh Raja has also written the story with Alfred Prakash, which works in parts. Vignesh deserves credit for not using the storyline in a modern setting, which could have disappointed the audience. Vignesh instead takes the viewers back to the ‘90s, where clashes between banks and villagers were common. The rules were different during that period, and the consequences of the same can be spotted in Kara, which brings some freshness on screen.

The issue of economic exploitation is not new to the viewers. They have seen it multiple times in films like Do Bigha Zamin, Mother India, Kaththi, and more. Vignesh Raja uses the concept in the best way possible, aiming to make audiences feel for the characters. While his execution works in certain portions, sometimes it might feel like some scenes could have been avoided. The first half starts very well. Although the film somehow maintains its grip after the interval, there are very few entertaining moments in this section. A tension-filled atmosphere is also maintained, with things turning unpredictable at certain points.

Cinematography and music are the biggest plus points of Kara

Kara

The story of Kara might not impress everyone. But a few other things deserve full marks. The first is cinematography by Theni Eswar. As mentioned, the movie is set in the ‘90s, and the entire setting looks real. This even helps the viewers to connect more with the characters that are on the good side. Another plus point is G.V. Prakash Kumar’s music. The artist has also done an outstanding job with the background score, which contributed a lot to the most important sequences in the film.

Mamitha Baiju

Apart from Dhanush, the film has other talented faces. Although the lead actress, Mamitha Baiju, does not get enough scope to shine, she leaves an impression with her screen presence. K.S. Ravikumar also delivers his best. Suraj Venjamaoodu, a popular face in the Malayalam film industry, is equally good as the police officer. The other actors, Karunas, Jayaram, and Sreeja Ravi, deserved better roles. However, they are also decent in terms of their performances.
