One of the most deadly accidents on a race course unfolded on April 18, 2026, at Nurburgring Langstrecken-Series, resulting in the death of 66-year-old Juha Miettinen. However, the race is also being noted, as four-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen was part of it.
For the unversed, at the start of the race, seven race cars collided, and it claimed the life of a 66-year-old racing driver, Juha Miettinen. He has a long affiliation with the NLS. He died during the ADAC 24th Nurburgring Qualifiers. Regarding the deadly crash, it occurred in the early stages of the race at the Klosteral section. There was a tight stretch on the track, defined by sharp corners and barriers, leaving the drivers very little room. As per reports, Miettinen was driving a BMW 235i when the incident occurred.

Talking about the rest of the six drivers who were also involved in the crash are in the hospital for their health checkup. However, none of them is in a life-threatening condition. Currently, investigations are underway to find out if there was an intentional oil spill. However, no formal cause has been established. But there were reports that stated that there could be an oil spill on the circuit that may have led to the fatal crash involving seven drivers.

For those who don't know, Nurburgring Nordschleife is the most dangerous permanent circuit, stretching nearly 13 miles through densely wooded German hills. It has more than 150 corners and barriers on the racing line. As per reports, Formula 1 abandoned the track after 1976, as the then-famous champion, Niki Lauda, suffered severe burns in the crash there. However, the track is still used for club racing, which showcases the daredevil antics of the drivers who take on the risk. After this red flag was issued, the NLS race came to a halt. The race was stopped right after the shocking incident, and a minute's silence was announced ahead of Sunday's race. It was a sad and traumatic moment, and no one had thought that the healthy racing would lead to such a big loss.

Juha Miettinen was a 66-year-old racer who had close ties with Nurburgring Endurance racing. He had made a name for himself in the close-knit circle and had been part of the NLS races. A series which has a mix of professional and amateur drivers competing with each other. At the age of 66, Juha's love for racing didn't dry up, and he was behind the wheel of a BMW 325i in the toughest race, proving his love for the sport. He was part of the sport because he loved it and not for the fame. The crash proves how motorsport carries a deadly risk to life, yet people go to all levels to be part of it.

The F1 world champion, Max Verstappen, was left shocked at the tragedy. He was part of weekend races as preparation for his debut in the full 24-hour Nurburgring endurance race, which was scheduled in May 2026. After the accident, he sent his condolences message. He took to his social media handle and revealed that he was shocked to witness what happened on the racetrack. He added that it is the sport we all love, but it is a reminder of how dangerous it can be. His note can be read as:
"Shocked by what happened today. Motorsport is something we all love, but in times like this it is a reminder of how dangerous it can be. Sending my heartfelt condolences to Juha's family and loved ones."
