Jonathan, the tortoise's exact age cannot be determined, but as per the historical data and photos from 1882, it is believed that he was 50 years old when he arrived on Saint Helena. It means Jonathan is currently 193 years old, and it makes him the oldest living land animal.

Jonathan lives at the governor of Saint Helena's home, which is known as the Plantation House. The island in the South Atlantic Ocean gives him the right atmosphere to live a happy and content life in these times of sea and land pollution. Jonathan has witnessed historical events as he lived during the time of eight British Monarchs, and he had even met King George VI and the young Queen Elizabeth II as they had visited the island in 1947. Jonathan has also bagged a world record for the oldest known living land animal. His name has been recorded in the Guinness World Records as the oldest tortoise. It all started after an account on X that claimed to belong to Joe Hollins, a vet who had once taken care of Jonathan, post the heartbreaking news of the tortoise's death on the island of St. Helena at an estimated age of 193. Soon, media outlets published the news, and it went viral across the world.
The death hoax has gained over 1.7 million views, proving how fast fake news can spread online. Jonathan's vet slammed the person, stating that it wasn't even an April Fool's joke, but a way of playing with emotions. Later, Joe Hollins dismissed the buzz about Jonathan the tortoise's death. He told USA Today that Jonathan is alive and the person purporting to be him is asking for the crypto donation. He called the new fakes and the person conning people. He said:
"Jonathan the tortoise is very much alive, I believe on X the person purporting to be me is asking for crypto donations, so it's not even an April Fool joke. It's a con."
