Johnny Somali Sentenced To Prison With Labor In Korea, Found Guilty Of All Charges, What Are They?

Controversial American streamer Johnny Somali has officially been sentenced to prison with labor in South Korea after being found guilty of all seven charges made against him. The 25-year-old streamer will serve six months in prison with hard labor for his lewd antics on his livestreams during his stay in the country. He has been found guilty of a particularly disturbing incident of kissing a statue symbolising Japan's wartime sexual slavery victims.

Somali's ruling comes after months of heated backlash and legal proceedings for his controversial actions that sparked nationwide outrage. Take a look at all the charges the streamer is facing.

Johnny Somali found guilty on all charges

Johnny Somali's trial started in 2025 after he was arrested several times in South Korea for his provocative livestream antics. On April 14, 2026, the South Western District Court found him guilty on all charges. He was accused of disrupting public peace during his stay in the country, such as distributing deepfake videos and getting in the way of businesses, among other crimes.

According to reports, the court found Somali guilty of all seven charges, including those that he previously denied and labeled "unfair". Despite his mother's request for leniency, prosecutors had pushed for a stricter sentence, given his history and lack of accountability even after multiple arrests and warnings. Somali will be kept in a labor prison facility for six months and given the harshest labor. He will be registered as an offender, and his phone access will be revoked during his stay.

In February 2026, prosecutors demanded a three-year prison sentence and a fine of 150,000 won (USD 101) for Somali, citing his 2024 arrests in South Korea. The Korea Times reported that the influencer was located at a convenience store in Mapo District, blasting music and leaking cup noodle broth. He was later also accused of disrupting public order on buses and subway trains.

Somali faced additional charges during court proceedings for creating disturbances while live-streaming on Seoul's Lotte World, which blocked passengers from boarding rides in the amusement park. Even more disturbing allegations came forward, including playing offensive audio, including North Korean speeches, in public spaces. While he previously pleaded not guilty to distributing deepfake videos online, the court dismissed his plea. Perhaps the most controversial incident was when he kissed the Statue of Peace, a memorial honoring victims of Japanese wartime sexual slavery.

Details of Johnny Somali's sentence

According to the verdict made on April 14, 2026, Johnny Somali will spend six months with hard labor, along with an additional 20-day detention for disruptive acts. Even after his prison release, he will face a five-year employment ban at all institutions involving children, adolescents, and people with disabilities. While he had been roaming free throughout the trial, he was immediately taken into custody following the court ruling due to concerns of being a flight risk.

During the court proceedings, Somali admitted to some actions but argued he did not fully understand their legal consequences in South Korea. Despite his apology and a plea for leniency from his family, the court ruled against him on all counts. He said:

“I did some foolish things under the influence of alcohol, and I realize the consequences. I sincerely apologize for this. Having been born and raised in the United States, I did not realize how serious the consequences of these actions, which would not be illegal in the United States, could be in Korea.”

Before his South Korea fiasco, Somali was arrested in Israel in early 2024 for hostile livestreaming and antagonizing locals. He was briefly detained and later released. In 2023, he was detained in Japan for similar behaviour: a series of disruptive livestreams, including trespassing on a construction site. He was reportedly fined 200,000 Yen (about USD 1,400) for blasting loud music in a restaurant.

Now in prison, Somali will have no access to personal devices throughout his sentence. What are your thoughts on the streamer's offensive actions?
