Why Did Jill Biden Divorce Ex-Husband, William Stevenson? He Claimed She Had Extra-Marital Affair

Former First Lady Jill Biden's ex-husband, William Stevenson, is in the news after he was accused of murdering his second wife, Linda Stevenson. However, not many know that before William married Linda, he and Jill were a couple. The two got married in 1970, but they parted ways in 1975. Read on to know what led to their divorce.

Why did Jill Biden divorce her first husband, William Stevenson?

Jill Biden shared the real reason for the dissolution of her marriage with her first husband, William Stevenson. The two met when Jill was just 18 years old. In her 2019 book, Where The Light Enters: Building A Family, Discovering Myself, she called the marriage a mistake of youth. But there was a time when she truly believed that it was destiny that brought them together.

Jill further revealed that her husband, William, was a charismatic entrepreneur who started his own business. After marriage, they rented a sleek modern house, and suddenly she was the wife. Her parents loved her husband, and she thought that she had found a love just like her parents. The excerpt from her book can be read as:

"Looking back, it may seem like that relationship was a mistake of youth. But there was a time when I truly believed we were destined for each other. He was charismatic and entrepreneurial and eventually started his own business. We rented a sleek modern house. Suddenly, I wasn’t just a student, eating cheap food and living in student housing any longer—now I was a wife... My parents didn’t object; in fact, my parents loved him. And most importantly, I thought I had found a love like my parents’, a partnership built on loyalty and devotion."

However, within a short time of spending, they grew in different directions. Jill tried to make their relationship work and thought that their marriage could be saved, but the reality of their relationship was different. Jill wrote in her book that their differences were beyond repair, and she didn't want to settle for a counterfeit love with William. However, back then, divorce was taboo, and no one would end the marriage. The thought of divorce left her horrified. She wrote:

"We were young, and it didn’t take long before we grew in different directions. I tried to make the relationship work. I thought I could will our marriage back to life. But I had to separate what I thought my family should be from the reality of what this relationship was. I’m not sure if I knew anyone who was divorced back then. The very idea horrified me. It meant failure, and in my still-young life, I had never failed at anything serious."

William Stevenson claimed the reason for his divorce from Jill was her extramarital affair with Joe Biden

However, William Stevenson had a different story to tell. In an old interview with the Daily Mail, William claimed that he had suspicions about his wife having an extra-marital affair with the charming politician, Joe Biden. He shared that he knew exactly when their affair started. He stated that she once told him that she had to take care of Biden's children and refused to go for a meeting with him. He shared:

"I know exactly when it was. Bruce Springsteen was going to play at The Stone Balloon [Stevenson's live music club] and I had to go to Northern New Jersey to pay him in advance. I asked Jill to go with me and she said no — she had things to do, she had to look after Joe's kids, Beau and Hunter. It was kind of a big deal to go meet Springsteen. I had no idea she and Joe were that kind of friendly."

William Stevenson added that his suspicions about Jill were confirmed when her friends confessed. They told him that they thought Jill and Joe were getting a little too close. Recalling one particular moment, William shared that it was in October 1974, when he was at work, and a guy came in and asked him about his wife's car, which had been damaged in a crash, and they told him that he should get an estimate, but he never heard from them. When Stevenson questioned him as to who he meant by 'they'. He revealed that it was Senator Biden who was driving the car. Stevenson stated that he asked Jill to leave their home as their marriage was over.
