However, just six months into their marriage, she became attracted to his close friend, Stephen Hall. She herself admitted to having flings with him and multiple other men. Her infidelity broke down the years of trust she and Jeremy had built together. After confessing to cheating on him, she left him for Stephen. After dating him for a while, she got married the second time in 1993. Two months later, Jeremy walked down the aisle with his second wife, Frances Catherine Cain.

Within four months of marrying Stephen, Alex realised that her ex-husband, Jeremy, had a huge impact on her life and that she couldn't move on from him. Later, in an ITV1 interview, she publicly admitted that leaving Jeremy was the "biggest mistake" of her life and she still loved him. While cheating on him and leaving him, she didn't think he would remain in her heart for long. She had no idea how big a part of her life he was until they parted ways and got remarried to different individuals. Her exact words were:

"Four months after I left him I realised I'd made a mistake and it's had a huge impact on my life and has affected me hugely for the rest of my life. Having Jeremy Clarkson as my ex-husband has had a huge influence on my life. I had no idea how great an influence that was going to be."

In 2010-11, Alex publicly claimed that she and her ex-husband, Jeremy, engaged in a seven-year-long extramarital affair after they both remarried to different individuals. She claimed that they kept their then-partners in the dark about their rekindled romance and engaged in a secret sexual affair. To stop the spread of Alex's unverified statements, Jeremy initially obtained a strict court privacy injunction in September 2010. The legal order banned the media from reporting on any alleged sexual or intimate dealings between the former spouses.

However, after a year, Jeremy lifted the injunction voluntarily, believing that "injunctions don't work" and are "pointless" in the age of the internet and Twitter (now X). Alex's fixation on the TV presenter ruined her relationship with her second husband, Stephen, and they split in 2001. Years later, Stephen's next partner, Kate Birchenough, told the Sunday Mirror that Alex was "obsessed" with Jeremy during her marriage to Stephen and thus made up stories of their affair. Kate alleged that Alex's actions caused Stephen extreme mental torment.

According to Kate, "poor Stephen" got unnecessarily involved in the Alex-Jeremy drama and had his heart broken. Kate claimed that Stephen went through a lot and was "wounded" due to his then-wife's behaviour. He was allegedly still carrying the trauma of those painful memories of that time with him in his next relationship. Kate claimed that Stephen's bitter past experience with Alex also affected his subsequent relationships. Her exact words were:

"The fact was, she was obsessed with Jeremy, and poor Steve got caught up in it. He would always play second fiddle to Jeremy. It has been very painful for Steve because it was so long ago, but Alex still wounded him greatly. This has been hanging over us for a very long time, and the ­injunction being lifted is a huge relief."
