The Spider-Man actor and celebrity jewellery designer met in early 2003. Four years later, in 2007, in Kona, Hawaii, in an intimate wedding ceremony surrounded by a small group of family and friends. The former pair welcomed their first child, a daughter named Ruby Sweetheart, on November 10, 2006. They completed their family by welcoming their second child, a son named Otis, on May 8, 2009. However, in October 2016, the couple shocked everyone by announcing their split. At the time, the couple, through a joint statement, told People:

Four years after their split in 2020, the celebrity jewellery designer filed for divorce from Tobey. At the time, a source told People that the couple had been living separately for a while. The insider mentioned that Jennifer and Tobey had completely different interests and hadn’t seemed to be connecting. The source said, "He’s extremely private and prefers to stay home, and she’s very social and has tons of girlfriends. They haven’t been happy together for a long time. But they are great parents, and they love their children." The couple officially went their separate ways in 2020.

Back in December 2025, Jennifer Meyer appeared on The Inside Edit podcast with host, Maeve Reilly. During the conversation with Maeve, Jennifer explained how actress and businesswoman, Gwyneth Paltrow helped her realise that divorce from Tobey could be beneficial for their family in the long run. The celebrity jewellery designer admitted that separation had been one of the greatest teachers. Giving a glimpse into what went wrong in their marriage, Jennifer said:

"I actually think that my divorce has been one of my greatest teachers, because it teaches you patience. Our daughter was 10 or something. Those are some intense times that you need to stay connected. And then we had a son who was 7. It's like you're raising kids at an intense time. But he is wonderful and I got lucky for that. And my life— it was not easy every day, and I'm sure he would say the same thing, 100 percent, and we definitely had to overcome some big hurdles."

During the same conversation, Jennifer shared that she had always looked up to Gwyneth Paltrow. Jennifer mentioned that she was very much impressed by the way Gwyneth Paltrow and her ex-husband parted ways in an amicable way. Thus, when her marriage to Tobey was ending, she took couples therapy. Jennifer said, "I called my therapist, and then I had to say to Tobey, 'Hey, we're going to go to couples therapy.' I now have an ex-husband who is my best friend and would do anything for me, and I would do anything for him. Anything in the world."

During the conversation, the celebrity jewellery designer described her breakup as a 'beautiful experience' in her life. Jennifer also confessed that she would love her ex-husband, Tobey, to the death. She was quoted as saying:

"I was able to make a conscious decision about how this breakup was going to go and trust that the universe had my back, had our back as a couple for our children, for all of these things, and really, it's been the most beautiful experience of my life having this beautiful breakup. I mean, I can't even explain. I would literally do anything in the world for Tobey. He is my brother. I love him to death, and we have the most beautiful family."
