Jenna Bush Hager reacts to AI Roker's 'Big Red' nickname
Jenna Bush Hager recalled the incident and explained that AI Roker called her "Big Red" when she stepped onto the set in a red outfit during the October 20, 2026 broadcast of Today. However, the nickname did not go down well with the women present. In turn, they immediately reacted by telling him not to say it.
Later, during the show on October 22, 2026, Jenna recounted the moment to co-host Sheinelle Jones. She explained why the seemingly simple comment had caused such a reaction. In her words:
"You can't call somebody, a woman, 'big!'"
Sheinelle agreed with Jenna and recalled how the women on the set had reacted to the comment. She also remembered that Savannah Guthrie had expressed her surprise at what AI Roker had said. According to Sheinelle, AI Roker was initially confused about what he did wrong. So, he asked her to explain the issue.
Sheinelle then explained that she had told AI Roker that he shouldn't comment on something that could make someone uncomfortable about their body. Therefore, to mend the situation, Roker repeatedly came up with alternative nicknames. One of them was "Tall Red." Sheinelle jokingly suggested that "Skinny Red" would have been a better option. However, Jenna wasn't convinced it. In her words:
"I'm like, 'Not okay!'"
Despite the awkward moment, the situation was lighthearted. In fact, the co-hosts laughed about the misunderstanding. Roker did not have any malicious intent, and the conversation remained playful.
For those who don't know, the incident brings attention to Jenna's earlier comments about body image. Back in 2023, she said her views about her body changed over time. The main shift came after she became a mother.
She explained that pregnancy and motherhood helped her to value what her body. Jenna also mentioned that she found a childhood journal where she wrote that her New Year's resolution in fourth grade was to lose five pounds. The finding stunned her because her eldest daughter, Mila, was then in the same grade.
Jenna Bush Hager has three kids with her husband, Henry Chase Hager. They have daughters, Margaret Laura "Mila," born in April 2013, and Poppy Louise, born in August 2015.
