IT: Welcome to Derry, Season 1 has finally reached its end, and it has taken us down several memory lanes. From the story of the man behind 'Pennywise' makeup to 'Dick Hallorann's' backstory in Derry, it has been a long run. However, as 'The Losers' makes the one last effort to stop 'Pennywise' from going beyond town, let's see what actually happened in the messy season finale.
The sinister fog has once again taken over the town, and 'Pennywise' has found its way to the gymnasium trap, which was set as a buffet for the evil spirit of Derry. However, while 'Pennywise' is ready to feast 'Ronnie', 'Lilly' and 'Marge' have arrived on the scene to find 'Principal Dunleavey's' decapitated head. 'Ronnie' further finds a blood-splattered poster for 'Will'. Unwilling to lose another one of their mates, 'Marge' says, "I want to k*ll that f**king clown." Nonetheless, even in the finale, the dagger's powers remain a mystery.

While 'Marge' and 'Ronnie' gang up on 'Lilly', the latter is highly suspicious about needing to hold the dagger, but snaps out of it when 'Ronnie' says she's the 'lifeboat' to the group. On the other hand, after getting a call from 'Big P', 'Leroy' begs 'Hallorann' for help. However, the latter has been s**cidal since 'Pennywise' opened his mind box. Which means no matter what 'Leroy' says, it falls on deaf ears. A lesson, not to bring the man without fear's family along for the relocation. Meanwhile, 'Charlotte' is losing her mind when 'Leroy' tells her that 'IT' has 'Will'.

'Rose' suggests that they use 'Hallorann's' abilities to find 'Will' and gives him a cap of Maturin root tea, which shuts up all of the voices and allows him to use his powers again. 'Hallorann' turns into a personal GPS for the parents as 'Rose' proposes that they bury the dagger in the Deadwood, the farthest point in town, before 'Pennywise' can escape. The adults head off in the car towards the Deadwood, installing a sweating 'Hallorann' deep in his trance in the back seat like a GPS.

All roads lead to the frozen river as the children and adults close in on 'Pennywise's' parade to feast on children. While the girls come wielding the dagger, 'Pennywise' keeps circling them, calling them, "The fool, the freak, the failure". 'IT' grabs 'Marge' by the ankle and does one of the craziest things this season, 'IT' confirms that 'Marge' is 'Margaret Tozier', 'Richie's' mother in the IT movies. However, it means nothing to 'Marge' yet and only proves that 'IT' experiences the past, present, and future simultaneously, and that it could theoretically kill 'Marge' or 'Lilly's' ancestors to ensure they don't exist.

How could the season finale end without any deaths? Before 'IT' could sink its teeth into 'Marge', 'Hallorann' and the adults arrive, locking the entity in a Shine reality where he's back at the carnival as 'Bob Gray'. The floating kids drop, and 'Will' joins the girls. However, 'Taniel' and 'Leroy' get hold of the dagger, and the military is adamant about stopping anyone who messes with their plans, instantly killing 'Taniel'. With 'Pennywise' frozen, 'Shaw' decided to walk up to it, reassuring 'IT' that the US military would help. Nonetheless, 'Hallorann' loses his hold on 'Pennywise' and, despite 'Shaw's' attempts, chomps off his face.

Even after 'Shaw's' death, the colonel refuses to listen to 'Leroy,' but the adults overpower the military, and the kids make a run for the Deadwood. With 'Pennywise' on their heels, 'Hallorann' sees 'Sesqui' send 'Rich's' spirit to help the dagger into the ground. 'IT' shapeshifts into a giant bat-bird in a last-ditch effort. However, it all ends dramatically as the dagger connects with the other pillars, shooting golden beams into the sky, and 'IT' retreats into its black hole.
Derry is finally at peace and 'Rich's' family and friends finally have his funeral. 'Marge' gives a speech on 'The Losers' behalf. 'Hallorann' also stops by and sees 'Rich' with his arms around his father and 'Will'. 'Lilly' stops by her father's grave and apologises for not visiting very often, but she tells him about her new friends who have kept her so busy. Later, 'Marge' tells 'Lilly' how 'Pennywise' told her about her future and said how it could kill their parents. They conclude that 'IT' is omnipresent.

The adults also part ways; 'Hallorann' tells 'Leroy' that he'll be leaving Derry to cook in the restaurant in London, a nod to his role in The Shining. The 'Gorgans' are finally making their exit. As far as we know, 'Hank' is still a wanted fugitive in the town as he packs the car for the road to Nova Scotia or wherever. 'Ronnie' and 'Will' share a moment and a 'kiss' before they part ways. 'Leroy', who now walks with a cane after being shot in the leg, and 'Charlotte' were also thinking of leaving. However, without 'Taniel', 'Rose' is selling the farm, and thinks the 'Hanlons' should stay and join her secret committee about the 'Galloo'. So, they decide to buy the farm off 'Rose' and raise sheep for the rest of their lives, endings that are too cheery for the future we see in the IT films.

We also meet 'Ingrid Kersh' again, now a patient wearing a straitjacket at Juniper Hill. As the doctor puts on some calming music for her, the scene cuts to October 1988, when the next cycle of 'IT' begins and IT: Chapter One takes place. Bringing back Joan Gregson as older 'Mrs Kersh', she's busying herself with a painting, until it is interrupted by a screaming nurse. People are gathering by a doorway when we see that a female patient has hung herself. Her family is crouching on the floor, the crying father shaking off his daughter. The finale ends with Sophie Lillis, who played 'Beverly' in Chapter One, saying:
"You know what they say about Derry, dear, no one who dies here ever really dies."
