Years after the success of The Social Network, a similar story linked to Mark Zuckerberg is finally making its way to the big screen on October 9, 2026. Titled The Social Reckoning, the upcoming thriller is based on the Facebook document leak, which happened in 2021, addressing the harmful impact of the platform, which was allegedly ignored by the company, aiming to earn more profits.

The movie features Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg. Frances Haugen, who submitted the documents to the Securities and Exchange Commission along with The Wall Street Journal, has been portrayed by Mikey Madison. The trailer for the film, which is directed by Aaron Sorkin, was recently released on June 10, 2026 (ET). The document leak case dates back to September 2021. Frances Haugen shared some confidential documents that included the details of research on Facebook. The results revealed that Instagram was allegedly impacting the mental health of teenagers. While Frances joined Facebook in 2019, she managed to create copies of the documents. The Wall Street Journal later shared the report with a title called The Facebook Files.

For the unversed, Frances served as a product manager for Facebook’s civic integrity team. Notably, she revealed her identity in October 2021. Facebook initially responded to the leaks by stating that they avoided the company’s positive research. On the other hand, Frances appeared for an interview, claiming that she resigned from Facebook after she became completely dissatisfied with the company.

Frances obtained her MBA from Harvard Business School. She worked at Google for a long time, where she started as a product manager. She later became a software engineer in the same company. She was also a product manager at Pinterest and Yelp. Before she completed her MBA, Frances was a teaching assistant at Olin College of Engineering and was the founder and co-editor of Olin College Yearbook. She has been a transparency and accountability advocate for Beyond the Screen since 2021.

The leaked documents claimed that popular faces from the world of politics and other fields were getting a different kind of treatment on Facebook. Furthermore, the moderation policies were reportedly applicable to everyone in a different form. This process was allegedly called XCheck. Facebook reportedly refused to share the details of the research linked to Instagram, where the results claimed that the platform was toxic for the young generation. The documents stated that a portion of teenage girls who already had a bad opinion about their bodies started feeling worse about the same thing due to Instagram.

Apart from all these, a group of Facebook’s shareholders had once filed a lawsuit against it. The lawsuit claimed that the company paid USD 5 billion to the US Federal Trade Commission to find a solution for the Cambridge Analytica data scandal. The lawsuit reportedly revealed the reason behind such a big payment figure, stating that it aimed to save Mark Zuckerberg from his personal responsibilities.

Frances Haugen claimed that she witnessed one of her friends becoming a victim of social media conspiracy theories. She said that Facebook algorithms prefer the posts that can easily attract anyone, aiming to let people use the platform frequently. Haugen alleged that Facebook implemented the process of anti-disinformation, bringing changes to the News Feed algorithms. However, the company’s disinfo team was relieved of its responsibilities after the US Presidential election in 2020.

Haugen said in another interview that certain individuals who were involved in the US Capitol incident in 2021 allegedly used Facebook to start the attack. Before her resignation, Frances preferred to continue her remote work from Puerto Rico. However, the company did not allow her to do that, and she eventually left.

Around a month after she leaked the documents, Frances Haugen was called to testify before a Senate subcommittee. Frances claimed in her testimony that Facebook was harmful for children. She also said:

“During my time at Facebook, I came to realise a devastating truth: Almost no one outside of Facebook knows what happens inside Facebook. The company intentionally hides vital information from the public, from the U.S. government, and from governments around the world.”

As per the leaked documents, it was revealed that the eating disorders took a worse turn among 17% of the teen girls who were using Instagram. Senator Marsha Blackburn eventually accused Facebook of using an addictive product to attract children under the age of 13. On the other hand, Frances said that Facebook was never honest when it came to sharing information about the platform’s impact on the health and safety of children.

Frances requested the authorities to check the algorithms that operate certain things on Facebook and Instagram. She claimed that there are a lot of posts that are exposing teenagers to anorexia content and bringing distance between family members. Haugen alleged that it is leading to ethnic violence in Ethiopia.
