Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea. At the age of 5, she was adopted by her Canadian-born parents, Ralph and Marilyn Kerr and was raised in Fairport, New York. According to a report by Democrat and Chronicle, Kim was left near a police station and had spent time in an orphanage before meeting her parents. Her mom and dad, Marilyn and Ralph, received the call about her on Christmas Eve 1974, and on New Year's Eve, she met her parents and two brothers at New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Terry was born in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. He attended Penn State University and studied petroleum and natural gas engineering, and graduated in 1973. After graduation, Terry started working at Getty Oil Co. in Texas. Later, in 1975, he joined Felmont Oil Co. In 1983, Terry founded East Resources Inc. after borrowing USD 7,500 from family and friends. According to a Forbes report, by 2010, Terry sold the majority of his assets to Royal Dutch Shell for USD 4.7 billion.

Kim and Terry first crossed paths in 1991 at a restaurant. At the time, Kim had graduated from Houghton College with a degree in Communications and wanted to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. When Kim was 21, she was planning a trip to Alaska to work at a fishing camp and to raise funds for her journey, she decided to apply for a waitress job in upstate New York. While Kim was filling out her forms, she began chatting with Terry, who was eating at the restaurant.

Back then, Terry was 39 and was a divorced father of two children. He gave Kim his business card and later offered her a job at East Resources, his oil and gas exploration and production company. Eventually, they fell in love and got married in 1993. The couple is parents to three children, Jessica, Kelly and Matthew. In 2010, the duo donated USD 102 million to build the Pegula Ice Arena at Penn State University.

In 2011, they bought the Buffalo Sabres. Later, in 2014, the couple also bought the Buffalo Bills. In 2023, Terry shut down their company, Pegula Sports and Entertainment and took direct control as president of both the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres. The couple co-owns the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres. After owning the Buffalo Bills in 2014, Terry said:

"Owning any professional team is about winning and the primary goal of our ownership will be to win the Super Bowl and bring championships to the city of Buffalo."

In the same year, Jessica wrote an essay for The Players’ Tribune in which she revealed that her mom, Kim, was recovering from a cardiac arrest that she had faced in June 2022. Kim experienced a medical emergency when she was asleep. It was Terry who became her pillar of strength. Jessica wrote:

"Today, my mom is still in recovery, and although it is the same answer every time someone asks me, it is true; she is improving every day. She is dealing with significant expressive aphasia and significant memory issues. She can read, write, and understand pretty well, but she has trouble finding the words to respond."
