Sofia Devries lost her life in February 2026, and now, her diving instructor, Thiago Nahuel Pocovi, 26, is facing charges of manslaughter in the death of the influencer. After she vanished under the sea, her body was found two days later. She was taking Scuba diving lessons off the coast of Argentina on February 16, 2026.
A court hearing was opened on July 6, 2026, and the scuba diving instructor appeared in the hearing virtually from Buenos Aires. The lawyer stated that he was in charge of a group of seven divers, and he violated the safety of the people and regulations that are needed for professional diving instructors.

What happened to Sofia Devries underwater?
The case is further investigated before the trial. The report claims that Sofia went on a diving course with her partner and other divers to advance her scuba certification. They were diving in Golfo Nuevo around the Hu Shun Yu 809 artificial reef, a site which was created when the fishing vessel was sunk in 2017 to create a habitat for marine life.
Sofia's body was found two days later after she disappeared 65 feet below the water, making the fun outing turn tragic. According to reports, when the group was underwater, they had difficulty continuing to swim due to poor visibility, which made it hard for them to stay together. As per police, Sofia and her partner were left behind by the group when they hit the seabed.
During the tragic moment, Sofia was left distressed, and she scrambled to remove her breathing regulator. Her partner did his best to help, but Sofia lost access to the air supply and died after drowning.
As soon as the news of Sofia's passing surfaced in February 2026, due to Scuba diving, netizens expressed their thoughts. One user wrote, "What do you suppose happened with her 3 companions that they had to be hospitalised, two of them received hyperbaric treatment? Perhaps they were panicked at something that happened with her, and they ascended too quickly? Maybe they realised she was lost?"
Another user penned, "Diving is dangerous; you're underwater with little room for error. It's actually very important to remember that and to respect it. However, if you learn properly and follow your techniques, we make it as safe as possible. The majority of diving accidents are fully preventable."
