Michael Jackson's fortune is still making headlines almost twenty years after his death, and at the centre of the estate's dispute is the late pop star's only daughter, Paris Jackson. With the theatrical release of Michael, the Jackson clan once again returned to the spotlight, but not necessarily for Jaafar Jackson's brilliance in portraying his uncle in the biopic.
When Michael premiered on April 20, 2026, at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre, the absence of Paris Jackson among the attendees didn't go unnoticed. Paris and her aunt, Janet, publicly distanced themselves from the project, with the 28-year-old calling it out on her social media for her dad's biopic being "sugarcoated".

A few weeks ago, Paris Jackson once again reached the court, urging them to take a closer look at how the pop icon's estate is being handled by its executors. With a reignited debate about the late star's legacy, we are here to answer some of the biggest questions surrounding the high-profile dispute.

Paris was only 11 when she lost her father, Michael Jackson, in 2009, at age 50. She and her siblings, Prince and Bigi, were solely raised by the pop icon after his divorce from Debbie Rowe, and they were placed under the care of their grandmother, Katherine, and cousin TJ Jackson. When Michael died, he didn't leave cash directly to his children; rather, his assets were placed into a family trust designed to benefit all three kids, as well as his mother.

At that time, the King of Pop's estate was reportedly drowning in debt, estimated at just over USD 500 million. However, over the years, it has grown into a financial powerhouse, with its current value estimated at around USD 2 billion. According to court filings from the estate's executors, Paris Jackson has received approximately USD 65 million in benefits so far, including distribution, assets, and financial support. However, that's not the full payout. Because the estate continues to generate revenue, the trust is still growing.

Despite receiving tens of millions, Paris isn’t satisfied with how things are being handled at her late father's estate. In October 2025, details about her inheritance surfaced when she filed a legal petition challenging what she called excessive “gifts” and “gratuities” worth USD 125,000 and USD 250,000 paid to three law firms, which were never explained. Paris described them as "uncaptured time," asking why the "counsel was incapable of recording unbilled time, or why such a failure should not preclude payment."

Since then, Paris has raised serious concerns about the executors her late father had personally chosen before his death: John Branca, an entertainment lawyer, and John McClain, a music executive. In her court filings, Paris claims that the executors, as well as the estate's lawyers, have been overpaid with fees exceeding a whopping USD 148 million by 2021, which "dwarfs any amount distributed to Paris or her siblings."
The 28-year-old singer also claimed that USD 464 million of the estate’s funds had been left uninvested, which, if true, could reduce what’s ultimately available to her and other heirs. In a July 2025 filing, Paris also questioned irregular payments by executors, asking the court to review a 2010 order that allows legal fees without prior approval and to mandate full disclosure of payments from 2019 to 2023. Paris believes mismanagement could mean less money for her and her siblings in the long run, and she would not stop until she "gets enough."

Michael's estate, however, has strongly denied all allegations. The executors say there would be no fortune to fight over, had it not been for their decisions. The Branca and McClain duo argue that it was through their involvement that the estate could be rebuilt from massive debt into a multi-billion-dollar empire. To assist their cause, the estate has also hired lawyers, accountants, and other professionals, arguing that those payments were necessary for such results.

The executors further claimed that Paris Jackson herself has "benefitted more than most" from their work, and eventually won a key court decision. A judge has partially dismissed Paris's claims and even reportedly ordered her to cover some legal fees.
Besides numbers, Paris Jackson's dispute with her father's estate has worsened after a private screening of her father's new biopic. The singer-actress has repeatedly criticised Antoine Fuqua's Michael, and in her September 2025 filing, she argued that the production was "dishonest, inaccurate, and full-blown lies," and even labelled it a "botched production."
Paris also claimed 0% involvement in the film, despite actor Colman Domingo's claim that she had been supportive. The 28-year-old refused to attend the film's L.A. premiere and even accused executor John Branca of using his role as a producer to cast actor Miles Teller as himself, which the latter has denied.

Paris Jackson was just 11 when she lost her father, to whom she was deeply close, and the loss hit her hard. Thrust into global attention almost overnight, she struggled with grief, loneliness, and anxiety. In the years that followed, Paris faced relentless media scrutiny and battled mental health challenges, including PTSD, while also coping with substance use during her teenage years.
Paris's journey through addiction has been a highly publicised road to recovery, and through it all, her transparency has earned her immense praise and love from millions of fans. Today, she is a professional singer, model, and actress best known for her role in Swarm and American Horror Stories.
It looks like the legal battle between Paris Jackson and her beloved father's estate is far from over!
