'House Of The Dragon' Season 3 Finale Alters A Book Moment, Showrunner Explains, 'Targaryens Say...'

House of the Dragon has turned out to be one of the most successful shows on HBO. Notably, the third season of the series started airing on June 21, 2026. The ongoing season ended with its eighth episode on August 9, 2026. A lot of things have happened this time, setting up the events of the fourth installment, which is said to be the final season of the show.

The finale is trending as it has not followed the events of the book. The ending of Season 3 features ‘Queen Rhaenyra’ revealing the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy to the masses in King’s Landing. Although the finale of Season 3 has led to a debate on social media, the showrunner has now opened up about the same.

House of the Dragon showrunner explains the events of Season 3’s ending

The House of the Dragon Season 3 finale carried strong ‘Daenerys’ parallels, especially in how ‘Rhaenyra’ resorts to force against her own people in pursuit of power. While she doesn’t order a massacre, her decision to execute a religious leader who became a political rival was chilling and bloodless.

In a major departure from George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, ‘Rhaenyra’ addresses the people of King’s Landing and publicly reveals the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy, warning of the White Walkers and claiming she is the 'Prince That Was Promised' meant to stop them. Neither the prophecy nor this public speech appears in Martin’s book.

Given the scale of the announcement, audiences expect history to record the ‘Dragon Queen’s’ warning, or what some might call her madness. When asked about this in a press conference for the third season, showrunner Ryan Condal responded by saying:

“Targaryens say crazy sh*t all the time.”

Ryan clarified that while the moment isn’t in the books, there are accounts of ‘Rhaenyra’ growing despotic and unpopular. Condal explained that ‘Targaryens’ are prone to self-aggrandizement, and to common people it could just sound like a ruler inflating her own importance. He said the goal was “a real seismic change” in how ‘Rhaenyra’ relates to her people. Declaring herself their saviour right after killing their faith leaders was meant to shift both her relationship with the realm and with the audience.

Emma D’Arcy, who plays ‘Rhaenyra’, addressed the scene, saying that it explores how fragile power is and how easily political stability can collapse. On the other hand, Condal promised that the upcoming fourth season will be the biggest yet, with new characters, dragons, and locations.

Multiple characters have died at the end of House of the Dragon Season 3

In the eighth episode of House of the Dragon Season 3, ‘Daemon’s’ army fights at Tumbleton. ‘Ulf’ turns on Team Black. ‘Ormund’ and ‘Roderick’ kill each other in the battle. Meanwhile, grief-stricken ‘Helaena’ jumps from the Red Keep, leading to her death. The finale ends with major betrayals, deaths, and tragedy for both sides.

‘Ser Roderick Dustin,’ commander of the Winter Wolves, was told to hold out until Tumbleton’s main gate fell, and he did. Played by Tommy Flanagan, ‘Roderick’ even landed a crippling strike on ‘Ormund’ before dying with a smile, consumed by ‘Silverwing’s’ flames.

‘Ormund Hightower’ revealed his cruelty early, using children as human shields on Tumbleton’s walls. He sealed his fate by mistreating a hungover ‘Ulf’ right as fighting began. For all his talk about ‘Targaryens’ being unfit to rule, it was still a dragon that killed him. ‘Kat’s’ death was ambiguous. When ‘Hugh’ found her, there were no visible injuries, but his anguished scream made it clear that she was gone.

‘Helaena’ didn’t fall at Tumbleton, but her death is hard-hitting. The pregnant queen threw herself from a Red Keep tower rather than remaining ‘Rhaenyra’s’ captive. Fed up with the ‘High Septon Eustace’s’ refusal to crown her Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, ‘Rhaenyra’ had him executed by the sword. Given how many of her subjects follow the Faith of the Seven, that decision will likely cost her dearly.
