Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleHouse of the Dragon, the spinoff of Game of Thrones, has built a big fan base ever since it premiered in 2022. The show has even created records for its viewership numbers. After two successful seasons, House of the Dragon is back with Season 3, which began streaming on June 21, 2026 (ET).
The makers are already planning to end the show with the upcoming fourth season. This is possibly one of the reasons that one episode will be released on a weekly basis, leading to the end of the third season on August 9, 2026. While one episode is not sufficient to give a final verdict on whether the season is bad or outstanding, it has started on a good note, leaving sky-high expectations for the upcoming episodes.

There have been shows like House of the Dragon that gained recognition for their characters and storyline. While the start of some shows left people disappointed, fans were not satisfied with the end in other situations. But in this case, the third season does not waste a lot of time revealing the current state of the characters.

The Battle of the Gullet in the first episode is proof that the makers don’t want fans to get bored or wait much longer for things to unravel on screen. While the first two seasons spent much of their time in political manoeuvring, the third season enters the world of war with a lot of intensity. The premiere clearly sends a message to the audience that it will be all about fire, blood, and consequences.

Considering that there are only eight episodes, there is no time for the makers to focus on unnecessary sequences. Hence, the first episode of House of the Dragon Season 3 maintains a fast pace, as it is lean and propulsive, and even trusts the viewers to remember the previous season. The stakes are clear, the alliances are set, and the cost of war is immediate. The episode ends at a point where it generates excitement for the next episode.

The Battle of the Gullet is the biggest strength of Episode 1, as it is created on a large scale. The VFX work needs to be appreciated here since everything looks natural instead of being a CGI spectacle. The visuals are not expected to disappoint anyone.

On the other hand, a few issues of the first episode cannot be ignored. The biggest problem here is the character 'Rhaenyra,' played by Emma D’Arcy. Despite a good performance, the character’s writing renders her impenetrable and reactive. Attempts to give her historical gravitas fall flat when her choices feel driven by emotion instead of strategy, leaving her with little pull over her own council or the audience. 'Daemon' and 'Alicent' suffer from similar aimlessness as lead characters. Visually, the episode’s colour grading might not be loved by everyone.
House of the Dragon Season 3 also works for a few characters. The script focuses on a lot of important things, including King’s Landing intrigue with 'Aemond' on the Iron Throne, 'Daemon' bloodied in the Riverlands, and more. Some new additions bring a different kind of excitement. This includes 'Ormund Hightower,' 'Sharako Lohar,' 'Roddy the Ruin,' and more.
Overall, it can be said with conviction that the third season of the series is an explosive return. It delivers a lot in terms of scale, casualties, and momentum. While some problems with the characters exist, the show gets a new life due to some new faces, real stakes, and a willingness to be brutal.
