Hilary Duff called her intense teenage romance with Joel Madden when she was just 16 and he was 25. Hilary’s relationship with Good Charlotte singer, Joel, was one of the most talked about celebrity romances, mainly because of the couple's huge age gap of 9 years. The couple started dating in 2004 and were very serious.
During a 2005 interview with The View, Hilary even reportedly confessed to the fact that she deliberately tried to keep their relationship a secret because of their significant age gap. It was Hilary’s first serious love and she wanted to protect it forever. However, after two years, the couple broke up in 2006.
The reason behind the split was stated to be a natural choice and it had nothing to do with their age gap. In an interview, Hilary stated that the split was a mutual realization that the relationship had run its course. Despite the mutual breakup, it wrecked Hilary so much that for a very long time, she didn’t know how to be single. One year after the split, Hilary spilt to Ellen DeGeneres that some of the songs from her music album, Dignity, were inspired by her breakup with Joel Madden.
Hilary Duff hinted at losing her virginity to Joel Madden
In an interview with E Online, Hilary Duff spoke about her relationship with Joel and also hinted at losing her virginity to him. Speaking about the same, she said:
“I had a pretty serious relationship at a young age that I ended, and it wrecked me for a good year and a half. I didn't really enjoy being single. I had a 26-year-old boyfriend. So everyone can make their own assumptions about what I was doing.”
After their breakup, the two moved on as Joel got married to Nicole Richie and Hilary too settled down with Matthew Koma after a series of relationships. Both Hilary and Joel managed to maintain a great bond of friendship after the breakup and are often spotted out on dinner and other events with their current spouses.
Joel once spoke about maintaining a “great relationship” with Hilary despite their breakup and revealed that he has often maintained great friendship with people he has been with. The singer also stated that he likes to keep his side clean and stated:
“Every girl I’ve ever dated I have respect for, and I always try to leave them in good terms. I don’t see the necessity to be friends with anyone you’ve dated but definitely out of respect of the time, you have to be kind of respectful and that’s what I try to do.”
In 2019, Hilary Duff tied the knot with Matthew Koma and soon the couple welcomed three daughters. Since then, their marriage has become stronger, and they continue to share a bond of both creative and personal partnership built on mutual respect.
