Panettiere's on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach Hickerson, were with her when she died. Four days later, on August 20, 2026, Brian broke his silence on her death. According to his statement, police confirmed there were no signs of foul play.
Hayden Panettiere's official cause of death revealed
On September 22, 2026, the Greenville County Coroner’s office confirmed that Hayden’s death was caused by the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, methocarbamol, and Quetiapine. The death has been officially classified as an accident. A few days back, on September 14, 2026, TMZ reported that the Heroes star took "one fatal pill" on the day of her death, and multiple law enforcement sources believe that the medication was oxycodone laced with fentanyl.
Insiders connected to the 36-year-old actress' death case told TMZ that Hayden had a "long-time drug dealer" in Los Angeles. The long-time drug dealer provided the actress with several black-market prescription drugs, including oxycodone. The day before her death, Hayden reportedly met up with the dealer on a flight from Los Angeles to South Carolina and purchased several drugs, including the "fatal pill". The police authorities suspect that Hayden consumed that fatal pill on the morning of her death.
In a new statement, the coroner’s office mentioned that on August 16, 2026, at approximately 1:51 PM, someone called 911 because the 36-year-old actress was reportedly in cardiac arrest at 701 Easley Bridge Road in Greenville. Emergency responders arrived at the spot and found her unresponsive inside the residence where she was temporarily staying. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel initiated advanced cardiac life support measures. However, their efforts were unsuccessful, and Hayden was pronounced dead at 2:32 PM.
The Greenville County Coroner’s office, along with the Greenville City Police Department, then investigated Hayden’s death. Hayden’s autopsy was conducted by a certified forensic pathologist, and the report found no signs of physical injuries or trauma that contributed to her death.

The sudden death of Hayden Panettiere was indeed shocking and heartbreaking. She is survived by her only child, daughter Kaya, whom she welcomed in 2014 with then-fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko. Hayden and Wladimir raised Kaya together for the first four years of Kaya’s life, but in 2018, the Heroes fame gave full custody to Wladimir.
Addressing her decision about giving full custody of Kaya to her ex-partner, Wladimir, during a May 2026 episode of Jay Shetty’s podcast On Purpose, Hayden shared that at the time of the custody change, she was seeking treatment for alcoholism, substance abuse, and postpartum depression. Hayden added that she was hurt by the idea that people might think she willingly gave up her child and did not care about it. The decision was heartbreaking for her.
Two days after her tragic death, Wladimir took to his Instagram handle to pay an emotional tribute to Hayden. He mentioned that the announcement of Hayden’s sudden death saddened him deeply. He shared that although the Heroes fame was no longer his partner, she was an important person in his life and, most importantly, she was the mother of their daughter, Kaya. Praising her, Wladimir wrote:
"She built an incredible career through immense talent, while also facing the darker sides of a very demanding industry. Nothing will erase the times we shared or the place she had in our lives. To our daughter Kaya, I will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure she remembers the person she was. Young and talented people like Hayden should not leave this world so soon."
