What happens to 'James' and 'Odin' in Heart of the Beast?
Heart of the Beast follows the story of 'James' and 'Odin', whose trip turns dangerous after 'James' has a heart attack while flying, which leads to their plane crashing. While they survive the impact, they are injured and stuck in the wilderness with no easy way to call for rescue. And as if this wasn't enough, now 'James' has to keep moving while dealing with a body that has already failed him once. Initially, the film builds like a survival story as the duo tries their best to navigate the dangers while trying to stay alert.
'James' tends to 'Odin' while the dog stays alert to threats that the soldier might miss. Their years together mean they understand one another with very little communication. Even though 'James's' training helps him stay calm and make decisions, it doesn't guarantee his heart won't betray him or that 'Odin' will be safe. Each setback makes the distance between them and the road feel greater.
And soon, the question becomes how far 'James' can get his companion before his strength runs out. While tackling through the wilderness, 'Odin' is attacked by a wolf, and 'James' suffers fatal injuries trying to protect his dog. Combined with his failing heart, the attack puts his journey to an end, leaving 'Odin' to continue with the only person who cared for him. 'Odin' reaches the road alone and is found by a young woman, played by Anna Lambe. The film shows 'Odin' arriving somewhere he can be helped, even as it asks us to grieve the person missing from that moment.
That choice gives Heart of the Beast's ending its force. It proves their bond and leaves the audience in tears. 'James' wanted 'Odin' to get a better life, especially after everything they had endured. That said, Heart of the Beast is indeed a tearjerker, but not in a manipulative manner.
Heart of the Beast ending explained
Both 'James' and 'Odin' carry the effects of their time at war. Their shared history explains the closeness between them, but it has also kept their lives tightly bound to what happened in their army days. The flashbacks are proof that neither has completely left that experience behind. Out in Alaska, they once again watch over each other in hostile surroundings.
While 'James's' death ends their partnership, it gives 'Odin' a chance at survival beyond that bond. 'James' knows he cannot accompany him into the future or know where 'Odin' might end up, but he still gives him a chance to make that journey. That is why the opening glimpse of 'Odin' on the road feels different when it returns in context. We were told he would survive. We had to watch 'James' help make it possible, knowing their story would end with the dog walking on alone.
