Actress Hayden Panettiere passed away on August 16, 2026, leaving her close family and industry colleagues heartbroken. She was just 36 at the time of her demise. Hayden's untimely death sparked nationwide debate on the grooming of child stars, mistreatment by industry seniors, and the need for a healthy upbringing. Amid that, her on-screen mother, Sylvia Jefferies, who might have been closer to her than her real mom, Lesley Vogel, opened up about the late star and her "inner demons."

Hayden Panettiere's on-screen mother recalled her mental battles after her sudden death

Sylvia Jefferies, who played the role of Hayden Panettiere's on-screen mom in the hit series, Nashville, opened up about their relationship and the mental struggles Hayden went through before her death. Sylvia shared that Hayden seemed like a "tornado" due to her mood swings. She shared that Hayden was sometimes difficult to be around due to sudden changes in her behavior. In her words:

"At times, Hayden was not easy to be around. I remember calling her a downright tornado. But she was our tornado. The sun that appears, the light mist that begins, the rain that gets heavier, the swirling of everything around her, and then the gentle tapering rain returns, along with the calm and sun and light in her eyes, and the giggle in her voice."

Hayden Panettiere's on-screen mom shared that the late actress was talented and could have had a very bright future if her dark past didn't hold her back. According to Sylvia Jefferies, sometimes Hayden's "inner demons" were unbearable for her. Her exact words were:

"She had an incredibly bright future ahead of her, although her inner demons were at times too much to bear."

Despite Hayden Panettiere's occasional troubled behaviour, Sylvia shared a close bond with her and kept their fond memories in her heart. She was proud of her on-screen daughter "for sharing the real Hayden, something that had to be excruciatingly painful for such a gentle soul." She said that the 36-year-old's death affected her so deeply that she had to take a day off from her shoot to pull herself together.

Sylvia also recalled the first time Hayden called her "mama" during the filming of Nashville and that their birthdays were just a week apart. Following Hayden's passing, those became nostalgic memories for Sylvia. She further stated that their "hearts were shattered" at the sudden passing of the "sweet girl". Looking back at their happy time together, Sylvia Jefferies stated:

"I've had to take the day to let the idea that Hayden is not with us wash over me...I pause as I reflect on her, looking at photos, remembering scenes, listening to voicemails, and remembering the first time she called me 'Mama' while she shared stories of her youth. We seemed far apart, but we were very close in our hearts. Our birthdays even being one week apart. 20years and one week apart."
