'I Lost Even After Winning Case..' Harish Rana's Lawyer Who Fought His Case To Grant Him Euthanasia

Harish Rana was a 32-year-old engineering student from Ghaziabad who had big hopes, but all he could do was create a big impact on India's law against 'iccha mrityu' euthanasia. For the unversed, he was in a coma for over 13 years. With no improvement in his condition, the family knocked on the Supreme Court's door to withdraw him from life support and allow him to die with dignity.

Harish Rana's lawyer, Manish Jain, on the historical verdict of getting euthanasia for Harish Rana

On March 24, 2026, Harish Rana passed away at AIIMS. His condition was continuously monitored after he was allowed passive euthanasia by the court. The staff made sure that he didn't suffer during this time. Meanwhile, in an interview with NDTV, Harish Rana's lawyer, Manish Jain, talked about getting the historical order in favour of him.

Manish Jain shared that when the verdict on allowing euthanasia for Harish Rana was announced, the court was jam-packed. From the courtroom to the gallery, everyone was wondering about the judge's decision. However, it wasn't easy for the judges to deliver the verdict, and they looked visibly emotional. Manish said:

"When the verdict was being announced, the entire court was packed. From the courtroom to the gallery, there was a crowd everywhere, everyone was eagerly waiting to see what the Supreme Court would decide. Both judges became emotional while delivering the verdict; the expression was clearly visible on their faces... I was very disappointed myself. But the family felt that if the verdict came in their favor, it would be a great relief for the patient."

Manish Jain shared that when the verdict was given, the entire court went silent for a good 10 to 15 minutes; it was an emotional moment for everyone. The judges even met with Harish's family and got information from the doctor about the case and if there was any hope of improvement in his condition.

Harish Rana's lawyer revealed he lost the case even after winning

Manish Jain revealed that it was the first time a lawyer lost even after winning the case. He shared that he had met Harish Rana and had seen the pain he was going through for the past 13 years. "I lost even after winning. I had seen Harish with my own eyes many times, and I knew very well how much pain he was going through. 13 years is no small thing. The way his parents and family cared for him is beyond words. But now the only solace is that the court also understood the situation and gave a verdict that will set an example in the history of the country's judiciary."

Further, Manish Jain revealed that the court is not calling it 'passive euthanasia'. It is an activity which is prohibited across the country. As per the Supreme Court, it is an act of 'Withholding' or 'Withdrawing'. In Harish Rana's case, it was 'Withdrawing', which meant any tubes inserted in his body would be removed.

Further explaining the process, Manish revealed that Harish had three tubes inserted into his body. One is for draining mucus from his throat, another is for PEG feeding in his stomach, and the third one is for urine. And these tubes will be removed in a systematic manner.

We pray for the strength for many in these tough times after Harish Rana's demise.
