Handsome Devil: Charming Killer is a 3-part docuseries on Paramount that follows the murders committed by Wade Wilson in 2019. Directed by Brian Ross and Rhonda Schwartz takes a deeper dive into the media circus around the trial where he ended up being convicted and given the death penalty. However, unlike most murder cases, this one drew immense attention because of Wade's looks, which earned him a large following during the trial.
Wade Wilson built a massive fanbase through his appearances during the trial, attracting thousands of people. Some of the women even came forward in the docuseries admitting that they felt attracted towards the serial killer despite knowing what he had done. The docuseries explores the case, statements from Wade himself and the impact his actions caused.

The opening shot of the docuseries itself is a picture of Wade Wilson's smiling face. A smile that fooled thousands of people across the world to overlook the crimes he had committed and think they could "fix him" if given a chance. Wade, who became known as the 'Deadpool Killer' because he shares the same name as Ryan Reynolds' character in Deadpool, received love letters in prison during the trial. However, the series reminds everyone why exactly he was put behind bars in the first place.

The first episode of Handsome Devil: Charming Killer goes over the night of October 6, 2019, in Fort Myers, Florida, where Wade is outside a local club with Mila Montanez, his girlfriend at the time. While he took her car and left to do drugs, Mila stayed behind. Cut to the next morning: Wade showed up at the spa she owned in a different car and busted her lip trying to get into it. Police tracked him to a parking lot across the highway, but didn't chase him when he drove away.

However, little did Fort Myers police know that Wade had already murdered Kristine Melton in her home, and after he drove away from that parking lot, he would randomly encounter Diane Ruiz on the street and brutally murder her as well. While the police looked for Wade, the bodies of the two women were found after receiving a missing persons call for both. Wade went to hide at a random house, but got in touch with his biological father, Steven Testasecca.

As soon as Steven knew where his son was, he made the tough decision and informed law enforcement of his son's location. Steven Testasecca further volunteered to visit him in jail to try to get Wade to tell him where Diane's body was. During that visit, Wade Wilson went over the horrific details of how he killed Diane Ruiz, which included running her over with his car multiple times after he strangled her.

Talking about the making of Handsome Devil: Charming Killer, the production style is surely not in the running for any awards. However, the objective of the series, as stated, is not to impress but present the events of the case as truthfully as possible. While the production value is truly commendable. Nonetheless, this feels more like a hacked-together docuseries on Investigation Discovery than anything else.
There is no artfulness in the way the events are presented. However, what will leave you in chills is not the short shrift this docuseries has given Wade Wilson's victims, but the truth behind Wade's looks and charm, and how he was able to attract viral attention, despite the brutality of his killings and the bizarre tattoos he got on his face while he was in jail. An interview with Wade's former girlfriend, Mila Montanez, dominates the first episode.

What's further interesting is to see how the longer Wade was missing, the more Mila admitted to the authorities that he would tell her about his desire to kill someone. However, despite knowing that she just chalked it up to "men talk", completely ignoring the fact that he had beaten her so bad that he got sent to jail for it only a few months prior to the incident. While that would warn one about their partner's tendencies, Mila appeared completely aloof, that is, until she found out Wade had actually killed people.

While it's clear that if Mila had paid more attention, the horrendous acts might have been prevented, Wade Wilson is evidently a smooth talker, which makes it harder to understand his intentions. Not only did Wade fully use his looks and his ability to charm people and cover his intent, but he also used them to get a good amount of the public on his side. But that also means that, as with many true-crime series about infamous killers, he gets the attention that he craved, and the victims and their families are mostly treated like secondary characters in the drama.
Insight into Steven Testasecca's heroic decision to not only turn his son, Wade, in, but get him to confess to Diana's murder truly leaves us in chills. What further shook the audience was how Steven maintained his calm all the while having to listen to Wade go over the gruesome details of both murders. Mila Montanez also deserves some credit for coming forward on camera to admit that she gave Wade multiple chances, especially after he beat her to a pulp. Talking about the soundtrack, the series used a song Something 'about this just isn't right, which, honestly, is disturbingly on brand.
