In a recent interview, their co-star, Shagufta Ali, who has shared screen space with the pair in Hero No. 1, opened up about their equation. She also mentioned how Govinda’s wife, Sunita Ahuja, handled Govinda and Karisma’s rumoured relationship.
Shagufta Ali reveals Govinda and Karisma Kapoor were 'close' on the set of Hero No. 1
In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, veteran actress Shagufta Ali, who has shared screen space with Govinda and Karisma in David Dhawan’s Hero No. 1, opened up about their equation behind the scenes. Shagufta shared that the pair were close on the set and although Govinda never told her about his and Karisma’s equation, their close bond was clearly visible. In her words:
"Dikhta toh tha. He never came to tell me that, but it looked like there was. As long as their on-screen pairing lasted, the public watched them, later got bored watching him with only one heroine. The public also might have felt there was an overdose of it."

In the same interview, Shagufta shared that Govinda’s wife, Sunita Ahuja, never visited the set of Hero No. 1. Recalling her presence during an outdoor shoot, Shagufta mentioned that Sunita spoke to everybody with utmost love and affection. She added that Sunita used to behave very well and never created a scene on the set. Shagufta was quoted as saying:
"Sunita never came on set. She came on an outdoor shoot once, with their children. She used to go out very rarely. She spoke to everyone with utmost love, affection and respect. She used to behave very well, and never created a scene on the set."

Further in the interview, Shagufta shared that Sunita showed grace and even if she knew about Govinda and Karisma’s rumoured relationship, she didn’t react to it openly in front of everyone. She tolerated a lot. Shagufta called Sunita 'understanding'. In her words:
"She showed grace. Even if she knew about them and didn’t react to it in front of everyone openly, then it means that the woman has tolerated a lot. I appreciate that about her. Few people do this. She is very understanding. Otherwise, she could have created a scene too. Who would not do it?"
While fans of Karisma and Govinda shipped them, the actress had once opened up about their close friendship. In fact, Karisma also shared that she was a huge fan of Govinda, also known as Chi Chi. Recalling her fangirl moment, Karisma shared the time when she met Govinda for the first time.
Karisma said that she was very crazy about Govinda’s dance moves, and when his film, Khudgarz, released, she was in love with the song, Aap Ke Aa Jane Se. She said, "I was a huge fan of Chi Chi ji (Govinda) since the very beginning, just like everyone else. I was so crazy for his dance that I remember when Khudgarz (1987) was released, I was in love with the song 'Aap ke aa jane se.' And when Chi Chi ji met me, he asked me, 'Aap heroine banna chahati hein?' and I shyly said, 'Ya.' And that is when he said, 'Aap bahaut badi heroine banogi!' Who knew that we would eventually work together!"
