Will Reeves diagnosed with testicular cancer
In a candid conversation with PEOPLE, Will Reeves revealed that he was raised to share his struggles if they could help others. For the unversed, Will was referring to how his parents, Christopher Reeves and Dana Reeves, fought for spinal cord injury awareness and research and even launched The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation after his father was thrown from a horse and became paralyzed from the neck down when Will was just 2 years old.
Will went on to share how he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, which then spread to the lymph nodes in his abdomen. However, he shared the good news along with it and said he was cancer-free as of a checkup on September 8, 2026. And inspired by his parents' example, he’s sharing his own cancer story now, for the first time. He added:
"I have felt so loved and supported and rooted for by family, friends and strangers alike for my entire life. And that’s a big part of why I wanted to speak about this. I’m going to be fine. But this was a heck of a chapter."
Will reflected on how he had noticed a tender lump on one of his testicles. However, three months later, his wife urged him to go see a doctor. In early May 2026, he underwent an orchiectomy to remove the cancerous testicle, the standard surgical procedure for testicular cancer. The couple shared how they hoped that this was just a "momentary blip in an otherwise great time in my life". However, further test results revealed that 95 percent of the testicular cancer found was embryonal carcinoma.
For the unversed, embryonal carcinoma is an aggressive form of the disease, leading to a six-hour surgery on June 10, 2026, to remove some dozens of lymph nodes in his abdomen. He further added that three of those tested positive for testicular cancer, dictating two rounds of chemotherapy.
Will Reeves reflected on going back to the hospital where his mother received treatment for cancer
In the same conversation, Will revealed that the irony was not lost on him that 20 years after his mom died of lung cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering, he was back there getting treated. However, that was not all. The experience also reminded him of his dad and how, in the nine years of his life, Will's mom and their family had cared for him. He reflected on how being taken care of by his wife greatly reminded him of his mom and dad's story.
He also revealed how he managed working while getting chemo. He recalled doing cold-capping to keep his hair and using anti-nausea drugs so he didn't feel sick. He admitted that it could have been much worse, but he is glad that they caught it early. Will also shared how his ABC family had been by his side and added:
"The experience has taught me to pay attention to my body. And lean on your people. That started for me with Amanda, but it extends to my siblings, family, close friends and colleagues who helped carry me through. It’s easy to get caught up in the madness of modern life and forget what’s most important."
Will further looked back on his journey and said that even though a lot has happened in his life, nothing directly happened to him. He reflected on his father's death and said how the loss forged an emotional connection between Reeve and the public that moves him to this day. He added:
"My dad got injured, and then the next nine years a lot of our focus was taking care of him and making sure that we had as full and happy a life as possible, while also facing the realities of my dad being paralyzed and in a wheelchair, unable to move or breathe on his own. And then he died, and I had to learn what grief was. And shortly after that, my mom, who had never smoked, got sick with lung cancer and then died, and I learned grief all over again at a different level."
