Gautam Gambhir Allegedly Shows Middle Finger Towards Virat Kohli's Fans, Claims Truth Wasn't Shown

Former Indian opener, Gautam Gambhir has been hitting the headlines currently for one of his latest obscene actions in the public sphere. Although he tried clarifying things after the action, but the video showing his obscene gesture has been going viral on social media. It was during the ongoing Asia Cup, when the cricketer being part of the commentary panel of the continental tournament, Gambhir was seen exiting the stadium on September 2, 2023, that he was spotted doing the obscene action.

Gautam Gambhir was allegedly showing off his middle finger while 'Kohli-Kohli' chants were heard in the background

In a video that surfaced on the internet from the Kenya stadium, Gautam Gambhir was seen exiting the place along with a few others. At that time, there was a 'Kohli-Kohli' chant heard in the background referring to Virat Kohli with whom Gautam had a spat during IPL 2023. Soon, after that, the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning member was seen showing off his middle finger towards the audience and walking ahead. This obscene gesture of Gautam received huge backlash on social media and also from the cricketing fraternity.

Gautam Gambhir's reaction to his obscene action

Even though in the video only 'Kohli, Kohli' chants can be heard, contradictory to it, Gautam Gambhir claimed that a few Pakistani fans in the crowd were chanting anti-India slogans. Gautam also mentioned that those people from Pakistan brought up the Kashmir issue and made derogatory comments, which is why he reacted that way. In a media interaction with ANI outside the Pallekele stadium in Kandy, during India's final group stage game versus Nepal, Gambhir said:

"Whatever is shown on social media, there is no truth to it. People show what they want to show on social media. What actually happened was there were anti-India slogans being chanted, I heard chants of 'Hindustan Murdabad'. There were slogans about Kashmir also. So there will obviously be a reaction, one way or the other or laugh at it. There were a couple of Pakistani people... they were shouting anti-India stuff. Obviously, it was a natural reaction. I can't hear things being said about my country."

The former Indian opener, Gambhir further added:

"That's why that reaction came out. If you talk bad about the country, what do expect me to do? Should I smile and go away or keep quiet? I am not that kind of a person. I just want to say this, when you have come to watch a match, support your team. There's no need to give political reactions there. There is no need to bring up Kashmir there. There is no need to speak ill about India. You support your team, your country. There were Indian crowd also, they were supporting their team. I am telling this to both sets of fans, when you come to watch a match, support your teams. No need to talk about the country and Kashmir. Social media don't capture everything."

Afterwards, Gautam also took to his X (formerly known as Twitter) and addressed the same issue. He mentioned:

"“A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes”. Not everything is as it seems. Any Indian would react how I did to the kind of slogans used against our nation. I love our players & I love my country."
