A representative confirmed his passing, and a cause of death remains unknown. Beard joined ZZ Top in 1970 and anchored the trio for 56 years alongside Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill.
Known for his steady, hard-shuffling backbeat, he was famous for his singles like Sharp Dressed Man and Legs. Outside the music industry, his personal life also grabbed a lot of attention. For the unversed, he was married to Debbie Meredith at the time of his death. He previously tied the knot with Catherine Alexander.
Frank Beard tied the knot twice and had three children

Although Frank Beard was a popular face in the music industry, he preferred to maintain privacy when it came to his personal life. Notably, he was married twice and had two children. Several outlets have claimed that Catherine Alexander was Frank Beard’s longtime partner before they married in 1978. While a lot of details about the relationship and Catherine’s profession remain unknown, the marriage ended in 1981, three years after they tied the knot. The couple did not have any children.
Towards the end of that relationship, Frank Beard’s life grew unstable. Reports link the strain to his heavy drug use. He later addressed those struggles publicly, admitting how addiction hurt his personal ties. He sought treatment during that period, and ZZ Top also took a break.
Just four months after divorcing Alexander, Beard married Debbie Meredith in 1981. Public records show the wedding took place on November 11, 1982. They stayed together for almost 44 years, until Beard’s recent demise. Meredith kept a low profile. Her most visible appearance was at Dusty Hill’s 2002 wedding to Charleen 'Chuck' McCrory. Meredith and Beard served as maid of honor and best man during the occasion and were photographed together.
The couple had three children, including twin sons Nico and Max Beard. Some accounts also mention a daughter. But her name was never made public. In later years, Beard lived at the Top 40 Ranch in Richmond, Texas. He spent time playing golf and taking part in local community events.
Frank Beard stepped down from a tour a few days before his death

Around eight days ago, on August 11, 2026, Frank Beard stepped down from another tour that was planned with ZZ Top. A band representative confirmed that Frank was unwell and that a substitute drummer would step in. Rolling Stone also cited a spokesperson, saying that Michael Monahan, who had previously filled in for Beard, would join frontman Billy Gibbons and bassist Elwood Francis on stage.
The announcement followed ZZ Top’s abrupt cancellation of their tour kickoff at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on August 5, 2026. This wasn’t Beard’s first break for health reasons. During the band’s 2025 Elevation Tour, he stepped down due to an unspecified medical procedure, with John Douglas taking his place. Notably, Douglas played with the band in 2002 when Beard underwent an emergency appendectomy.
As mentioned, Frank Beard’s death was first revealed by his representative. In a statement, Billy Gibbons reflected on Frank Beard’s passing. He said that he and Elwood Francis had lost a close friend and musical partner, and that the world had lost one of the most naturally inventive drummers and a true Texas native. Gibbons also noted that Beard’s distinctive backbeat had been central to ZZ Top’s enduring success. He added that the band intended to continue performing, in keeping with Beard’s wishes.
Gibbons, 76, also posted a tribute on Instagram on August 17, 2026, via the official ZZ Top account, sharing a photo of Beard. In the post, he conveyed the same sentiments about losing a friend and collaborator and praised Beard’s influence on the band’s sound. The caption further stated that ZZ Top had canceled its scheduled concerts in Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs following Beard’s death.
Rest in peace, Frank.
