Christa Pike’s failed execution has sparked discussion worldwide. According to the latest reports, 50-year-old Pike is still in critical condition and remains on a ventilator. She was admitted to a hospital in the Nashville area on the night of September 30, 2026, following her botched execution. Christa survived two doses of lethal injection.

In a recent conversation, her lawyer Stephen Ferrell described her failed execution as 'torture'. Now, in an interview, a former death row inmate reacted to Pike’s botched execution.

Ex-death row inmate calls Christa Pike's failed execution 'real torture'

In a recent phone interview with Newsweek, former death row inmate Rejon Taylor reacted to Christa Pike’s botched execution. Rejon was one of the 37 inmates on federal death row whose death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole by former President Joe Biden shortly before he left office. For the unversed, Joe left office on January 20, 2025.

The decision to commute the death sentences came amid concerns that President Donald Trump would resume federal executions soon after returning to office for his second term. Taylor described Christa’s failed execution as 'real torture'. If the execution had been successful, Pike would have been the first woman put to death in Tennessee in more than 200 years. Rejon said:

"That, to me, is real torture. She was tortured."

Speaking to Newsweek, Taylor said that he believes Pike should be granted clemency after what she endured. In a recent interview with CNN, Pike’s lawyer Stephen Ferrell said Pike has remained unconscious and on a ventilator at a hospital since her failed execution. Taylor said:

"They gotta grant her clemency. They gotta grant her something."

In the interview with CNN, Ferrell called for Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to commute Christa’s sentence. He said that he doesn’t know what Pike’s physical state will be after the botched execution. He said:

"We don't know what her physical state will be, but it is clear that she has endured a torturous attempt at executing her. And we had already asked that the governor commute her sentence for many good reasons. I think she's spent over 30 years in prison, most of that in solitary confinement, only to be taken out and not executed."

In the same interview, Taylor drew parallels between his case and Pike’s. He noted that both he and Pike were teenagers when they committed the crimes that led to their death sentences. For the uninitiated, both Pike and Taylor were 18 when they committed the crimes.

Rejon, who is 42 years old now, was sentenced to death in 2008 for fatally shooting Atlanta restaurant owner Guy Luck in 2003. Taylor’s lawyers said that he fired his gun because he panicked when Luck tried to take a gun from inside a van in Tennessee.

Christa was sentenced to death by Tennessee on March 30, 1996. According to reports, Pike lured 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer to a park by telling her they wanted to visit a music store and collect marijuana they had hidden there. Christa and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl, murdered Colleen with a box cutter on January 12, 1995. After killing Slemmer, a pentagram was carved into her chest, and a piece of her skull was removed.

According to Christa, Colleen allegedly insulted her and tried to steal Pike’s then-boyfriend, Tadaryl, who was 17 at the time. In a 2006 interview with Helen Roberts, Christa admitted that she lost her mind on the night when she killed Colleen. She said that someone had taken over her and she did not realize what she was doing.
